Wilson, Jr., A Word from Father Drummond In 1994 Pope John Paul the Great allowed for the use of female altar servers at the discretion of the local ordinary. The late Bishop Keating often consulting his priests allowed for a limited use of female altar servers. (For example at university and college campuses, convents and nursing homes.) When Bishop Loverde came to be our Bishop, he left the policy as it was, and, indeed, is said to have reprimanded one priest of the diocese who introduced the use of female altar servers at the parish level without permission. After seven years as our Bishop and Pastor, Bishop Loverde has decided to expand the diocesan policy on the use of female altar servers to allow under certain circumstances such service at the parish level. In doing so, His Excellency is simply allowing what the Church allows. Allowing something is not imposing it and the use or non- use of female altar servers is to be decided on a parish by parish basis. The norms issued by Bishop Loverde actually favor the use of altar boys. For example a parish must request permission for the use of female altar servers. That parish could change its policy in the future and go back to "boys only". Additionally, the norms caution that if at a particular parish female altar servers come to predominate, permission for their use may be withdrawn. Female altar servers will not be allowed the use of cassock and surplices as is the case with altar boys. Bishop Loverde is only allowing what Rome has already allowed. For myself, I can say that I have felt no pressure whatsoever from the Bishop on this issue and I do not envision the service of female altar servers at St. Catherine of Siena in the foreseeable future. From my discussions with many parishioners there seems to be no pastoral advantage to a change in policy at St. Catherine's. The common thread between extremes of the left and the right on this and other issues is a willful lack of obedience. Where the Bishop is, there is Christ. We need to support and pray for our Bishop.
