A Word from Fr. Drummond
Today’s responsorial psalm is not, in fact, a psalm at all
but rather the twelfth chapter of the prophet Isaiah. The
twelfth chapter of Isaiah is very short – six verses in all. It
marks the end of the first large section of Isaiah which
details the destruction of Israel, but chapter twelve speaks
of hope despite the oppression, of a remnant that survives
and from which salvation comes to Israel. Hence, the joyful
nature of the responsorial “Cry out with joy and gladness:
for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.” This
closely echoes the opening lines of our first reading while
taking us right into the second readings. All three of these
excerpts are shot through with joy, hope and longing for the
Lord. This is a sign to us that the penitential season of
Advent is almost complete – its end bringing us the birth of
Him Who is our hope and our joy and the object of our
innermost longing.
Focus on the Liturgy of Advent
The prophesies of Isaiah are read often during the Advent
season, but all of the readings of Advent focus on the key
figures of the Old and New Testaments who were prepared
and chosen by God to make the Incarnation possible: the
Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, Sts.
Elizabeth and Zechariah. The expectancy heightens from
December 17 to December 24 when the Liturgy resounds
with the seven magnificent Messianic titles of the
O Antiphons.

Symbolic Pelican
A pelican appears on the center
panel of the altar here at St.
Catherine’s of Siena. The sea bird is
a symbolical of Our Redeemer and
particularly of the Holy Eucharist. In
this sense it is invoked in the sixth
stanza of the hymn Adoro te.
According to legend, it feed its young
with its own blood, and hence is an emblem of Him Who
shed His Blood for us, and Who nourishes our souls with
His Body and Blood. In the Old Testament and the New
Testament symbolic references to birds occur, and these
were multiplied in medieval literature and art.

Pro Life Prayer to the Virgin Mary
O Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of us all, we turn to
you today as the one who said “Yes” to Life. “You will
conceive and bear a Son,” the angel told you. Despite the
surprise and the uncertainty about how this could be, you
said yes. “Be it done unto me according to your word.”
Mary, we pray today for all mothers who are afraid to be
mothers. We pray for those who feel threatened and
overwhelmed by their pregnancy. Intercede for them, that
God may give them the grace to say yes and the courage
to go on. May they have the grace to reject the false
solution of abortion. May they say with you, “Be it done
unto me according to your word.” May they experience the
help of Christian people, and know the peace that comes
from doing Dog’s will. Amen.
