A Word from Fr. Drummond
Gingerbread houses are quite popular at Christmas
time. This is not inappropriate when we consider the
meaning of the name of the town in which Christ was
born: Bethlehem. The name Bethlehem comes from
the conjunction of two Hebrew words; Bayit, meaning
house and lechem, meaning bread. So we may
translate Bethlehem as Bread House or, more
elegantly “House of Bread”. The meaning is not
coincidental.
Our Lord was laid to rest in a manger, a feeding
trough. The English word manger itself comes from
the French verb, spelt the same way, which means to
eat. This in turn comes from the Latin, Manducare,
also meaning to eat.
From the very beginning of His Human Life, Jesus
points us to His Eucharistic Self.
Our Lord
established the Eucharist on the last night before His
death, yet He was pointing us to the Eucharist from
the very first night of His Life as a Human Being,
when in the town of the “House of Bread” He was laid
in a feeding trough. As we give and accept
Christmas presents, we would do well to consider the
greatest Christmas Present of them all, the Eucharist,
and give thanks to Almighty God for this most
wondrous Gift of Himself to us.
May our Lord grant you all a very
Happy, Healthy and Holy Christmas
.
His Only Son – Our Lord
From the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Name Jesus (430-431)
Jesus (in Hebrew) means “God saves.” Theangel Gabriel
told Mary “You shall name him Jesus.” The angel told
Joseph to name the child “Jesus, because he will save his
people from their sins.” Besides delivering Israel from
Egypt, God made them aware of their sins so they would
invoke him as their Redeemer.

St. Stephen the Martyr – December 26
th
First Christian Martyr – stoned c.33
They presented false witnesses who testified,
“This man never stops saying things against
(this) holy place and the law. For we have
heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazarene
will destroy this place and change the custom
that Moses handed down to us.” All those
who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at
him and saw that his face was like the face of
an angel. Stephen preaches to the Sanhedrin, concluding:
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your
ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not
persecute? They put to death those who foretold the
coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and
murderers you have now become. You received the law as
transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it.” When
they head this, they were infuriated, and they ground their
teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up
intently to heaven and saw the glory of God, and he said,
“Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out in a
loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him
together. They threw him out of the city, and began to
stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet
of a young man named Saul, who would later be known as
St. Paul. As they were stoning Stephen, he called out,
“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell to his knees
and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin
against them”; and when he said this, he died.
St. John the Apostle
Aka: Apostle of Charity; Beloved Apostle;
Beloved Disciple; Giovanni Evangelist; John the
Divine
St. John, the son of Zebedee, and
the brother of St. James the Great,
was called to be an Apostle by our
Lord in the first year of His public
ministry. He became the “beloved
disciple” and the only one of the
Twelve who did not forsake the
Saviour in the hour of His Passion.
He stood faithfully at the cross
when the Saviour made him the
guardian of His Mother. His later life was passed chiefly in
Jerusalem and at Ephesus. He founded many churches in
Asia Minor. He wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and
the Book of Revelation is also attributed to him. Brought to
Rome, tradition relates that he was by order of Emperor
Dometian cast into a cauldron of boiling oil, but came forth
unhurt and was banished to the island of Pathmos for a
year. He lived to an extreme old age, surviving all his
fellow apostles, and died at Ephesus about the year 100.

The Holy Innocents – December 28
Herod perceiving that he was
deluded by the wise men, was
exceeding angry; and killed all the
male children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the borders
thereof, from two years old and
under, according to the time which
he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was
fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah,
saying: “A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great
mourning, Rachel bewailing her children and would not be
comforted, because they are not.” Modern writers
conclude that since Bethlehem was a rather small town that
the number of boys killed were fifteen or twenty.
Christmas Toy Drive Successful!
A big thank you is in order for all those involved in our
successful toy drive to provide Christmas presents for
children served by the feeding center of our sister parish in
Nicaragua. Sixteen boxes of toys are on their way and
should be in Nicaragua this weekend. Thank you is in
order for:
♥ The parishioners who donated toys and money to buy
boxes and tape.
♥ Members of the sister parish who boxed, inventoried and
delivered the toys to American Airlines.
♥ American Airlines for donating free transport of the 16
boxes from National Airport to Managua.
♥ Captain Mike Wolfe, a newly retired American Airlines
pilot and St. Catherine parishioner who worked with the
airline to facilitate the free transport.
Thanks to the generosity of our parish, Christmas will
indeed be memorable this year for the dozens of boys and
girls in our sister parish’s feeding center which St.
Catherine supports through its periodic poor box.

The Twelve Days of Christmas
“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is
a delightful nonsense rhyme set to
music. But it had a quite serious
purpose when it was written.
Catholic in England during the
period 1558 to 1829, when
Parliament finally emancipated
Catholics in England, were
prohibited from any practice of
their faith by law – private or public. It was a crime to be
Catholic. The song was written in England as one of the
“catechism songs” to help young Catholics learn the tenets
of their faith – a memory aid, when to be caught with
anything in writing could get a person imprisoned or
hanged. The gifts in the song are hidden meanings to the
teachings of the faith. The “true love” mentioned refers to
God Himself. The “me” who receives the presents refers to
every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is
Jesus Christ. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented
as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy
predators. The other symbols mean the following:
Partridge
Jesus Christ
2 Turtle Doves
The Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens
Faith, Hope and Charity
4 Colly* Birds

5 Golden Rings
