A Word from Fr. Drummond
As Americans we all have the responsibility to vote, as
Roman Catholics we have the responsibility to vote
according to the tenets of our faith.
Among the issues facing us is the proposed
amendment to the Virginia State Constitution affirming
marriage as “a union between one man and one woman.”
The Bishops’ of Virginia, Bishop Paul Loverde and Bishop
Francis Di Lorenzo have jointly issued a pastoral letter on
the subject, copies of which are available in the vestibule.
I strongly urge everyone to read this letter, taking to
heart the teachings of our Bishop’s, which of course,
reflects the ages’ old teaching of the Church. In addition,
when electing individuals to public office, we should
consider their stance on this issue and that of abortion. If
we are faced with two or more candidates, we should
consider the viable candidate who will most support life;
that is oppose abortion. It is important that the
candidates supported are viable.
Abortion and its abolition or at least its limitation should
be the primary factor for Catholic voters. It is specious
reasoning to put the death penalty or other social concern
issues on the same level as abortion. One’s attitude to
the protection of innocent life at its most vulnerable
cannot help but impact on one’s attitude to other issues.
The organization, Priests For Life has put out a booklet,
“Voting with a Clear Conscience.” This booklet, together
with the Virginia Bishops’ Pastoral Letter have been made
available in the vestibule. Please study these documents
and then go out and vote like a Practicing Catholic.

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in

Page 3
Rome – November 9
th
Today marks the anniversary of
the dedication of the cathedral
church of Rome, on land owned
by the Laterani family, by Pope St.
Sylvester I (31 Dec.), 9 Nov. 324.
Honored as the episcopal seat of
the pope as bishop of Rome, it is the “mother and head of
all churches of Rome and the world”; residence of the
popes from the 4
th
century until their moving to Avignon
(1309); site of five ecumenical councils; dedicated to the
Savior, later to St. John the Baptist.
St. Leo the Great – November 10th
St. Leo was born of Italian nobility in
400 at Tuscany, Italy. A strong student,
especially in scripture and theology and
an eloquent writer and homilist. As
deacon, he was dispatched to Gaul as a
mediator by Emperor Valentinian III. He
reigned as Pope between 440 and 461. He persuaded
Emperor Valentinian to recognize the primacy of the
Bishop of Rome in an edict in 445. The doctrine of the
Incarnation was formed by him in a letter to the Patriarch
of Constantinople, who had already condemned
Eutyches. At the Council of Chalcedon this same letter
was confirmed as the expression of Catholic Faith
concerning the Person of Christ. All secular historical
treatises eulogize his efforts during the upheaval of the
fifth century barbarian invasion. His encounter with Attila
the Hun, at the very gates of Rome persuading him to
turn back, remains a historical memorial to his great
eloquence. When the Vandals under Genseric occupied
the city of Rome, he persuaded the invaders to desist
from pillaging the city and harming its inhabitants.

Priests For Life
“We encourage all citizens, particularly

Page 4
Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a
duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to
participate in building the culture of life. Every voice
matters in the public forum. Every vote counts. Every act
of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant
individual power. We must exercise that power in ways
that defend human life, especially those of God’s children
who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable. We
get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue – or lack
thereof – is a judgment not only on them, but also on us.
Because of this, we urge our fellow citizens to see
beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric
critically, and to choose their political leaders according to
principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest” (1998,
US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life).
