A Word from Fr. Drummond
The second half of Psalm 90 makes up this Sunday’s
Responsorial Psalm. Psalm 90 is the first Psalm in the
fourth part of the Psalter. It is described as “A prayer of
Moses, the man of God.” This is the only Psalm, which is
attributed to Moses. The first half of the Psalm focuses on
the fleeting nature of mankind in the face of God: “Thou
turnest man back to dust…For a thousand years in thy
sight are but as yesterday…Thou dost sweep men away:
they are like a dream…” The Psalmist then dwells on the
anger of God at man’s sinfulness. This Psalm, being a
prayer of Moses we may reflect on the emotions of the
prophet when descended from Mount Horeb with the Ten
Commandments only to find the Israelites worshiping the
golden calf. Verse 11 (just before we begin the
Responsorial) says “Who considers the power of thy
anger and thy wrath according to fear of thee?” Then we
begin our responsorial, “So, teach us to number our days
aright that we may gain wisdom of heart.” We see that
from God comes pardon and mercy. And, thus we have
the response itself, taken from verse 14: “Fill us with your
love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy.” The Psalm now
begins to reflect our First Reading, “I prayed and
prudence was given me: I pleaded and the spirit of
Wisdom came to me.” (Wis. 7: 7).
The Psalm in its entirety is also reflected in our second
Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews which speaks of
God’s word as sharper than any two-edged sword. But,
as we see in today’s Gospel it is only through God’s
Word, our Lord Jesus Christ, and following Him that we
may truly gain wisdom of heart.

Nicaragua Mission
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
On October 12
th
, we will be leaving on a mission and
pilgrimage to Nicaragua during which we plan to visit the
Church of Our Lady of Victory in El Crucero sector of
Managua, where in 1987 Our Lady appeared to Father
Bernardo Martinez, now deceased, who was a priest in
our sister parish. In that apparition, Our Lady carried the
Christ Child with a shoulder wound where he carried the
heavy cross. We will then visit Cuapa, where Father
Bernardo is buried. At the time of his death, St. Catherine
was planning to host him in an effort to collect money to
put a new roof on his church whose roof had burned. Our
visit to Cuapa on October 13
th
will coincide with the
twenty-sixth anniversary of the last apparition and we will
be joined by Miriam Weglian, of St. John the Beloved
parish in McLean and Nicaraguan native who wrote a
book on these apparitions.
We will subsequently visit Leon, the diocesan seat of
our sister parish, where we will meet with His Excellency
Bishop Bosco Vivas Robelo and visit the cathedral where
Father Bernardo was ordained. Our stop in Leon will
include a visit with Sister Paul Hidalgo, a spiritual
daughter of Father Bernardo whose apostolate among
the poorest of the poor is edifying, and includes
orphanages, senior centers, occupational centers and
homes for the poor. Afterwards, we will travel to El Viejo
to our sister parish where we will meet, pray and worship
with our brothers and sisters of the sister parish of the
Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and churches and
chapels, which fall under it. We plan to stay at the rectory
with the pastor, Monsignor Urbina, and meet with him and
the pastoral council. We look forward to visiting El
Peregrino Occupational Center and see how the donated
equipment and generator are being utilized. Additionally,
we anticipate being touched by seeing our old altar,
pulpit, baptismal font and holy water fonts, which are now
in the St. Catherine of Siena chapel, which was built
through your generosity.
It is our hope to attend Mass daily during our trip, and
rest assured that we will be praying for Fathers
Drummond and Howard and all of you and your families
throughout our journey. Please keep up in your prayers
and intentions. We plan to take many pictures and issue
a detailed report in the future. May God bless you and
your families abundantly.

St. Paul of the Cross – October 20
th
St. Paul of the Cross, son of a merchant,
was born at Ovada in the Republic of
Genoa on January 3, 1694.
After
receiving a vision while still a layman, he
founded the Congregation of Discalced
Clerks of the Most Holy Cross and
Passion (Passionists) in 1721 to preach
about Jesus Crucified. Preacher of such
power that hardened soldiers and bandits were seen to
weep.
--following from a letter by Saint Paul of the Cross
“It is very good and holy to consider the passion of our
Lord, and to meditate on it, for by this sacred path we
reach union with God. In this most holy school we learn
true wisdom, for it was there that all the saints learned it.
Therefore, be constant in practicing every virtue, and
especially in imitating the patience of our dear Jesus, for
this is the summit of pure love. Live in such a way that all
may know that you bear outwardly as well as inwardly the
image of Christ crucified, the model of all gentleness and
mercy. For if a man is united inwardly with the Son of the
living God, he also bears his likeness outwardly by his
continual practice of heroic goodness, and especially
through a patience reinforced by courage, which does not
complain either secretly or in public. Conceal yourselves
in Jesus crucified, and hope for nothing except that all
men be thoroughly converted to His will.”

U.S. Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998
“Adopting a consistent ethic of life, the Catholic Church
promotes a broad spectrum of issues…Catholic public
officials are obliged to address each of these issues as
they seek to build consistent policies which promote
respect for the human person at all stages of life. But
being ‘right’ in such matters can never excuse a wrong
choice regarding direct attacks on innocent human life.
Indeed, the failure to protect and defend life in its most
vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the
‘rightness’ of positions in other matters affecting the
poorest and least powerful of the human community.”
