A Word from Fr. Drummond
Judging from the number of hamburgers served, we
had fewer people at this year’s Parish Picnic than last
year. Last year the Knights served over 400 hamburgers:
this year only about 250 hamburgers were served, (seven
of which were eaten by Harris Moriarty)! Nevertheless,
we had a highly successful picnic. Although the air was
nippy the sun was out, and even though we served fewer
hamburgers than last year, there seemed to me to be
many more children present this year. That’s not a bad
trade-off.
The success of the Parish Picnic lies not so much in the
actual numbers attending, but rather in the amount of
overall parish participation in setting it up. Parents from
the school supervised games for our younger children.
The Over Fifty Club provided the deserts. The Knights of
Columbus did the cooking, while the Women’s
Association made buttons and the CYO provided both
drinks and face painting. The school sponsored the Cake
Walk, which raised twenty-nine dollars and two cents for
the poor box. The Rapp Family singers again provided
music. The Moon Bounce was generously donated by Liz
Lagyn Flower Farm in Aldie, Virginia. Special thanks are
owed to Diane Hoyer who not only oversaw the planning
stages of the picnic, but also went to actually pick up and
return the Moon Bounce. Special thanks are also owed
to Julian Heron of the Third Order Dominicans as he
donated the fee for the ponies. My heart felt thanks go
out to all who helped to make this year’s picnic a success.
God Bless You All

St. John of Capistrano – October 23
St. John was born at Capistrano, Italy in
1385, the son of a former German knight.
He studied law at the University of Perugia
and practiced as a lawyer in the courts of
Naples.
King Ladislas of Naples
appointed him governor of Perugia.
During a war with a neighboring town he
was betrayed and imprisoned. Upon his
release he entered the Franciscan
community at Perugia in 1416. He and St.
James of the March were fellow students under St.
Bernardine of Siena, who inspired him to institute the
devotion to the holy Name of Jesus and His Mother.
John began his brilliant preaching apostolate with a
deacon in 1420. After his ordination he traveled
throughout Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary,
Poland and Russia preaching penance and establishing
numerous communities of Franciscan renewal. When
Mohammed II was threatening Vienna and Rome, St.
John, at the age of seventy, was commissioned by Pope
Callistus II to preach and lead a crusade against the
invading Turks. Marching at the head of seventy
thousand Christians, he gained victory in the great battle
of Belgrade against the Turks in 1456. Three months
later he died at Illok, Hungary.

The Holy Eucharist – The Real Presence of
Our Lord - Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity
[God:] It is the body and blood of Christ crucified, wholly
God, wholly human, the food of angels and the food of
life. It is a food that satisfies the hungry soul who finds
joy in this bread, …for it is a food that must be taken with
the mouth of holy desire and tasted in love.

Sentence – Volume 3, page 179
