Judging from the number of hamburgers served, we
had fewer people at this year’s Parish Picnic than last
year. Last year the Knights served over 400 hamburgers:
this year only about 250 hamburgers were served, (seven
of which were eaten by Harris Moriarty)! Nevertheless,
we had a highly successful picnic. Although the air was
nippy the sun was out, and even though we served fewer
hamburgers than last year, there seemed to me to be
many more children present this year. That’s not a bad
trade-off.
The success of the Parish Picnic lies not so much in the
actual numbers attending, but rather in the amount of
overall parish participation in setting it up. Parents from
the school supervised games for our younger children.
The Over Fifty Club provided the deserts. The Knights of
Columbus did the cooking, while the Women’s
Association made buttons and the CYO provided both
drinks and face painting. The school sponsored the Cake
Walk, which raised twenty-nine dollars and two cents for
the poor box. The Rapp Family singers again provided
music. The Moon Bounce was generously donated by Liz
Lagyn Flower Farm in Aldie, Virginia. Special thanks are
owed to Diane Hoyer who not only oversaw the planning
stages of the picnic, but also went to actually pick up and
return the Moon Bounce. Special thanks are also owed
to Julian Heron of the Third Order Dominicans as he
donated the fee for the ponies. My heart felt thanks go
out to all who helped to make this year’s picnic a success.
