A Word from Fr. Drummond
The month of November begins with two major holidays
– All Saints Day on November first and All Souls Day on
November second.
The first is a sign of God’s intended destiny for us
all – that we be with Him in Heaven, in eternity, that each
and every one of us becomes a saint.
The second holiday is a sign of the work of which we
are in need because of our sins. God wants all to be
saints, but even the slightest stain of, or attachment to sin
will hinder us. On November first we celebrate all the
Human souls who have truly “made it”, and are in
Heaven, not just the known canonized saints, but all
those who are in Heaven even those we know not. On
November second we remember all who have gone
before us who are in need of prayers to help them out of
Purgatory and into Heaven. Our prayers on the second
of November can help to expand the number of saints we
will celebrate next year on All Saints day. And by the
Grace of God and being open to that Grace there will
come a November first when we ourselves are among
those who are commemorated.

St. Martin de Porres – November 3
rd
Born in 1579, the illegitimate son of a
Spanish nobleman, Juan, and a young
freed black slave, Anna Velasquez, Martin
grew up in poverty. He spent part of his
youth with a surgeon-barber from whom he
learned some medicine and care of the
sick. At age 11 he became a servant in
the Holy Rosary Dominican priory in Lima, Peru.
Promoted to almoner,* he begged more than $2,000 a
week from the rich to support the poor and sick of Lima.
Placed in charge of the Dominican’s infirmary; known for
his tender care of the sick and for his spectacular cures.
He established an orphanage and children’s hospital for
the poor children of the slums. He set up a shelter for
stray cats and dogs and nursed them back to health.
Martin lived in self-imposed austerity, never ate meat,
fasted continuously and spent much time in prayer and
meditation with a great devotion to the Holy Eucharist.
*Historically, almoners were Christian religious
functionaries whose duty was to distribute alms to the
poor.
