A Word from the Pastor
Last weekend was our seminarian Matthew DeForest’s
final weekend on assignment at St. Catherine of Siena.
Matthew hit the ground running when on his first full day
here. I had to go to the Reston Hospital Emergency Room
early in the morning and he was left to do a Communion
Service in place of the day’s Mass. He proved to be more
than equal to the task, and he relished the opportunity to
preach. As an acolyte he can give Communion at Mass
but is not allowed to preach at Mass. However, he can
preach at a Communion Service. He received so many
compliments that I assigned him regularly to the
Wednesday Holy Hour for reflection talks.
Matthew took a great deal of work off my shoulders this
summer, helping to set up for liturgical functions,
overseeing the altar boys and even closing up the Church
late at night.
He has all the qualities needed for a good priest: he is
prayerful, industrious, cheerful and friendly with a
boundless amount of energy. He will be sorely missed, not
only by myself, but especially by Gregory for whom he
always had time to throw a ball or Frisbee, as well as the
many parishioners who came to know him.
Matthew now starts his third year of theology at Mount St.
Mary’s in Emmitsburg. By the Grace of God he will be
ordained a deacon in June 2008 and a priest in 2009, and
our diocese will be the richer for it.
Please keep Matthew in your prayers as he continues
his studies, as well as Mick Kelly, our seminarian from last
year. Both would be more than happy to receive some
encouraging words and you can write to them at:

How to Begin a Private Holy Hour
There is no single “right” way to begin a Holy Hour, but
here are some suggestions: Start with body language,
making some gesture of profound adoration, such as
genuflecting or bowing to the Lord as a reverent
acknowledgement of His real presence. Then, ask the
Holy Spirit to fill you with His gift of praise. Unite your heart
with the Heart of Mary so that you can praise the Lord with
the Heart of His mother. Call upon the angels and saints to
help you to unite with their heavenly praise and worship.
Let your heart be aglow with the Lord’s radiant presence
and then follow the longing of your heart. Love Him, thank
Him, and praise Him, who is present and loves you. As He
tells us through one of the psalms,
“Be still and know that I am God” (Ps 46).

Our Lady of Knock – August 21
Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint
John the Evangelist appeared in a
blaze of light at the south gable of
Saint John the Baptist Church,
Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. They
appeared to float about two feet
above the ground, and each would
occasionally move toward the
visionaries, and then away from
them. The Blessed Virgin Mary was
clothed in white robes with a brilliant
crown on her head. Where the
crown fitted to her brow, she wore a
beautiful full-bloom golden rose. She was praying with her
eyes and hands raised towards Heaven. Saint Joseph
wore white robes, stood on Our Lady’s right, and was
turned towards her in an attitude of respect. Saint John
was dressed in a white vestment, stood at Mary’s left, and
resembled a bishop, with a small mitre. He appeared to be
preaching and he held an open book in his left hand.
Behind them and a little to the left of Saint John was a plain
altar on which was a cross and a lamb with adoring angels.
Fifteen people witnessed the apparition. Miraculous
healings were reported soon after, and it is now a major
pilgrimage destination. Patronage - Ireland
St. Bernard of Clairvaux – August 20
Born 1090 – Died 1153
AKA Mellifluous Doctor of the Church;
Last of the Fathers of the Holy Church
St. Bernard was born of noble
parentage in Burgundy, France, in the
castle of Fontaines near Dijon. Under
the care of his pious parents he was
sent at an early age to a college at
Chatillon, where he was conspicuous
for his remarkable piety and spirit of
recollection. At the same place he
entered upon the studies of theology
and Holy Scripture. After the death of his mother, fearing
the snares and temptation of the world, he resolved to
embrace the newly established and very austere institute of
the Cistercian Order. He also persuaded his brothers and
several of his friends to follow his example. In 1113, St.
Bernard, with thirty young noblemen, presented himself to
the holy Abbot, St. Stephen, at Citeaux. After a novitiate
spent in great fervor, he made his profession in the
following year. His superior soon after, seeing the great
progress he had made in the spiritual life, sent him with
twelve monks to found a new monastery, which afterward
became known as the celebrated Abbey of Clairvaux. St.
Bernard was at once appointed Abbot and began that
active life which has rendered him the most conspicuous
figure in the history of the 12
th
century. He founded
numerous other monasteries, composed a number of
works and undertook many journeys for the honor of God.
Several Bishoprics were offered him, but he refused them
all. The reputation of St. Bernard spread far and wide;
even the Popes were governed by his advice. He was
commissioned by Pope Eugene III to preach the second
Crusade. In obedience to the Sovereign Pontiff he traveled
through France and Germany, and aroused the greatest
enthusiasm for the holy war among the masses of the
population. The failure of the expedition raised a great
storm against the saint, but he attributed it to the sins of the
Crusaders. St. Bernard was eminently endowed with the
gift of miracles. Pope Pius VIII proclaimed him a Doctor of
the Church.
The Queenship of the BVM - August 22
The Ark: in the
ancient world, the
ark was usually the
throne
for
the
queen mother. It
was often led out
into battle with the
troops. See the
miraculous victory
in Joshua 6.
Mary is referred to
as “Ark of the
Covenant” because
the Holy
Spirit
overshadowed her
(Luke 1:35), just as
He overshadowed
the ark in the Old
Testament (Exodus 40:34-35). The word for “overshadow”
in both instances is “*epischiadze.”
In Revelation 11:19 John sees in a vision the Ark of the
Covenant in God’s temple in heaven. In the very next
verse Rev. 12:1 he sees “a woman clothed with the sun. . .”
This woman is the Queen Mother, and the male child she
bears is Jesus. [Note: remember that chapter divisions in
the Bible are arbitrary, and did not exist in the original
manuscripts.] Mary, the Queen Mother, is the Ark of the
New Covenant.
In the Messianic Psalm 132:8 we read: “Arise, and go to
thy resting place, thou and the ark of thy might.”
See also 1 Chronicles 15 in which we read how David went
about bringing the ark to the place, which he had prepared
for it. Revelation 12:6, 14: “The woman fled into the desert
to a place prepared for her by God . . . The woman was
given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly
to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she
would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out
of the serpent’s reach.”
*Greek word meaning overshadow.

The Holy Father’s Prayer Intention –August 2007
General: That all those who are going through moments
of inner difficulty and trail may find in Christ the light and
support which leads them to discover authentic
happiness.
Mission: That the Church in China may bear witness to
ever greater inner cohesion and may manifest her effective
