A Word from Fr. Drummond
One of the great traditions here at St. Catherine of Siena
has been the Pastor’s Annual Stewardship Award. The
first Stewardship Award was awarded 20 years to Andrew
Young, and since then many parishioners who have
donated time and effort have been so honoured.
Unfortunately the Award fell into abeyance in 2004. The
upside of that is that it leaves me a number of years to fill
(albeit after the fact). One of the most difficult things about
the Award (from my perspective), is who to choose, as
there are so many parishioners deserving to be recognized.
At any rate I have settled on the recipients for the years
2004 through 2006; Deeda Calderazzo for 2004; Fran and
Bob Chrownowski for 2005; and Richard Kane for 2006.
Deeda has long been a driving force for Ecumenism at
St. Catherine’s, representing the parish at the Great Falls
Ecumenical Council, but has also been very active in many
other ways, for example, getting volunteer families to take
in members of the Ukrainian and English youth Choirs that
visited several years ago. Deeda also raised $10,000 for
the Catholic Church to sponsor a room at the Ecumenical
Mary’s House, a home for young mothers in crisis, as well
as planning days of recollection, both for the parish and
the Great Falls Ecumenical Council.
Bob and Fran Chronowski were equally active in the
parish until they moved out west almost two years ago.
Fran functioned for years as Sacristan for St. Catherine’s
making sure that we had all the liturgical supplies that we
needed. Bob was always on hand if something went wrong
with the Church lights or heating and air conditioning. In
addition they donated the beautiful Divine Mercy Tapestry
which hangs in the Church vestibule. They also provided a
great deal of personal support for the priests of St.
Catherine’s. They are sorely missed.
In the Winter of 2005-2006, longtime parishioner Richard
Kane came in at my request to straighten out parish
finances, which had been sadly neglected. Richard’s work
paved the way for our current financial director, Richard
Webb. Additionally, Richard was very supportive of me
personally, and a tremendous help during the staff
upheavals that occurred that winter. As a member of the
Parish Finance Council, Richard Kane continues to lend
the parish his valuable expertise in our financial planning.
My heartfelt thanks go out to the new recipients of the
Pastor’s Stewardship Award, as well as to the many, many
other parishioners who are deserving of recognition for
their fine service to St. Catherine’s.
(The Award for 2007 will be announced at Easter).

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Let us put the Eucharist at the center of our lives as
Catholic Christians – let us claim a deeper faith in this
wonderful truth. St. James says, “If you want wisdom, pray
for it.” It follows then, that if we want faith, let us pray for it.
God sets our hearts on fire. All we need is faith in God,
and then our very lives will affect the lives of those around
us. We have to know that we know our Eucharistic King.
With the help of God, may we remain steadfast in this
pursuit.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
There are times when a scheduled adorer may need a
substitute to fill in for them. When this happens, please
utilize the substitute call list.

ending the following morning just before the 9:00 a.m.

The Icon of Divine Mercy
On the weekend of December 9
th
, the
Icon of Divine Mercy will be visiting our
parish. This particular image is a replica
of the icon of Divine Mercy displayed in
Krakow, Poland where the late, Holy
Father, John Paul II dedicated the whole
world to Divine Mercy. This is a true icon
painted for the Diocese of Arlington, by
Polish artist, Anna Sekowska who fasted
and prayed during the creation of the
icon. This icon will remain with us for
one week, giving us the unique
opportunity to pray together as a parish for the healing of
families. Accompanying the icon will be five smaller
replicas of the icon. These replicas will go to five families
in our parish who have agreed to pray one rosary and one
Divine Mercy chaplet each day that the icon remains in
their possession. All families are encouraged to participate
by taking one of the prayer cards with the same image that
will be provided by the Office for Family Life and to unite
their prayers with everyone in the diocese for peace and
healing in families.

The Meaning of Advent
The name Advent comes from the
Latin words, advenire (to come to)
and adventus (an arrival), and
refers to Christ’s coming into this
world.
It is that period of the year during
which the Church requires the
faithful to prepare for the
celebration of the feast of Christmas, the anniversary of the
birth and coming of Jesus Christ. The mystery of that great
day had every right to the honour of being prepared for by
prayer and works of penance. The focus of Advent is by no
means limited to just Christ’s first coming. An equal, if not
more important theme found in the Advent Liturgy is the
Second Coming of Christ when He comes again to judge
the world. It is somewhat similar to Lent, which prepares
us for Easter, the greatest feast in the calendar of the
Church. Originally the observance of Advent was made up
of fasting and took up forty days as with Lent, but was
reduced to four weeks.
The first allusion to Advent’s being reduced to four weeks is
to be found in the ninth century, in a letter of Pope St.
Nicholas I to the Bulgarians. The first Sunday of Advent is
the Sunday closest to 30 November; the feast of St.
Andrew and the fourth Sunday of Advent is the Sunday
before 25 December. The first Sunday of Advent falls
between November 27 and December 3. The Advent
season will thus have between 21 and 28 days, depending
upon where this Sunday falls. The first Sunday of Advent
is also the first Sunday of the new Church liturgical year.
Advent marks the beginning of the new Church calendar.
The liturgical colour for the season of Advent is purple, for
purple shows the majesty, which heralds the coming of the
King of Kings.
From the Vatican
The Holy Father’s Prayer Intention for
December 2007
General:
That human society may be solicitous in the care of all
those stricken with AIDS, especially children and women,
and that the Church may make them feel the Lord’s love.
Mission:
That the incarnation of the Son of God, which the Church
celebrates solemnly at Christmas, may help the peoples of

the Asiatic Continent to recognize God’s Envoy, the only
Savior of the world, in Jesus.
