A Word from Fr. Drummond
We come again to that time of year when we have to give
thought to the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal. This annual appeal
is the means by which each and everyone of us has the
opportunity to actively participate in building the Kingdom of
God here and now. The Diocese is simply the Parish writ
Large, and just as we all have the obligation to support our
Parish, so too we must support the Diocese. The principal
means for this is the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal.
The impact of the B.L.A. is widespread and affects us all,
even if at times this may not seem to be readily apparent.
Among the most important aspects of the B.L.A. is
education – on a variety of levels. This past year the
Diocese broke ground for a badly needed new high school.
In addition to this we have the newly reactivated
programme for the training and formation of new
permanent deacons. One of the candidates for the
Permanent Deacon Programme is Andy Usera, a
parishioner of St. Catherine’s. Then there is need of
funding for our seminarians, the future priests of our
diocese. We have a goodly number of seminarians
studying at Mt. St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, St. Charles
Borromeo in Philadelphia and the North American College
in Rome. During the past year St. Catherine’s was
especially blessed to have a First Year Theologian, Mick
Kelly, assigned to us. Mick is an exceptional young man in
many ways: prayerful, educated, intelligent, modest and
well on the way to holiness. The amazing thing is that he is
typical of our seminarians, whose training and formation is
paid for out of the B.L.A. We will all benefit, as these
young men are ordained to the Priesthood.
Our assessed goal for this year’s Bishop’s Lenten Appeal
is $197,000. While this sounds like a very large sum
(which it is) and is, in fact, larger than last year’s goal, it is
still less than the $223,000 that was pledged by St.
Catherine’s parishioners last year (91%, or $202,000 was
collected as of mid January). This means that if everyone
who pledged last year were to repeat that same pledge this
year, we would still exceed our given goal! Now I realize
that not everyone may be able to pledge as much as they
did last year, but some may be able to increase. Hopefully
others who did not pledge at all (we only had about 32%
participation) will this year participate. Each and every one
of us should look to the blessings we have received and
seek to share them.
In the next few weeks you will hear much about the
B.L.A.; next week we will have in pew registration for the
B.L.A. Some of you may have already received a letter
from the Diocese and even pledged. Please be patient if
some of this may seem repetitious or tedious, and know
that it is for the good of our diocese, for the good of our
souls and for the Glory of God.

St. Agatha –
February 5
th
Martyred c.250 at Catania, Sicily
We have little reliable information
about this martyr, who has been
honored since ancient times, and
whose name is included in the canon
of the Mass. Young, beautiful and
rich, Agatha lived a life consecrated
to God. When Decius announced
the edicts against Christians, the
magistrate Quinctianus tried to profit
by Agatha’s sanctity; he planned to
blackmail her into sex in exchange
for not charging her. Handed over to
a brothel, she refused to accept
customers.
After
rejecting
Quinctianus’ advances, she was
beaten, imprisoned, tortured, her
breasts were crushed and cut off. She told the judge,
“Cruel man, have you forgotten your mother and the breast
that nourished you, that you dare to mutilate me this way?”
One version has it that Saint Peter healed her. Imprisoned
further, then rolled on live coals, she was near death when
an earthquake struck. In the destruction, the magistrate’s
friend was crushed, and the magistrate fled. Agatha
thanked God for an end to her pain and died.

The Angelus and its History
The Angelus Domini is the traditional form
used by the faithful to commemorate the
holy annunciation of the angel Gabriel to
Mary. It is used three times daily: at
dawn, mid-day and at dusk. It is a
recollection of the salvific event in which
the Word became flesh in the womb of the
Virgin Mary, through the power of the Holy
Spirit in accordance with the salvific plan
of the Father. During the Easter season, the Regina Coeli
(Queen of Heaven) replaces the usual arrangement of the
Angelus prayers. The Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) is
often recited as the concluding prayer. The devotion
derives its name from the first word of the three versicles,
Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ (The angel of the Lord
declared unto Mary). The origins of the Angelus are
somewhat obscure, but it seems clear they are rooted in
monastic prayers of the hours, and even in its earliest form
included the three “Hail Mary’s”. Originally the Angelus
prayers were said at Conplin (night prayer), and over the
years mid-day and morning hours were added. By the
early seventeenth century the formula of prayers exactly as
we know it today was complete.
“Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you” (Lk 1:28)
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of
your womb” (Lk 1:42)
The Angelus
V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art
thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now
and at the hour of our death.
V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.
Hail Mary, etc.
V. And the Word was made Flesh.
R. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary, etc.
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let Us Pray
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our
hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son
was made known by the message of an angel, may be His
Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His
Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
