A Word from Fr. Drummond
The role of the Virgin Mary in the Gospels is pivotal. She
accepts to bear the Messiah, and it is from her alone that
our Lord takes His humanity.
He begins His public ministry, working His first miracle at
the Wedding at Cana, at Mary’s request. She hovers in the
background throughout His public ministry, stepping out of
the shadows to be with Him at the Cross. Throughout this,
however, she is recorded as saying very little. Two of the
Gospels, Matthew and Mark, record no words spoken by
Mary. Luke has the most, recording 179 words of which
The Magnificat takes up 135. In John, at the Wedding of
Cana, she speaks only nine words.
Mary’s role in the economy of salvation is not simply to
bring Jesus to us, but also to always point us back to Him.
Her most important words are the last ones Sacred
Scripture records her as saying (in today’s Gospel):
speaking of her Son to the stewards, she says, “Do
whatever He tells you.” These words she speaks not only
to the stewards at the Wedding of Cana, but to us all in
every succeeding generation: “Do whatever He tells you.”
Do whatever He tells you

Adult Bible Study
“I will build my Church!” –
An Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles
What was the early Church like? Who were the first
Christians? How did the Apostles spread the Catholic faith
throughout the world? What does their example have to do
with us today?
This bible study is an introduction to the Acts of the
Apostles. While it builds on our previous bible study of the
Gospel of St. Luke, we will take a beginner’s approach.
There is no prior knowledge of scripture necessary.
All are welcome: parishioners and non-parishioners,
Catholics and non-Catholics. Please bring your Bible.

St. Anthony the Abbot – January 17th
AKA: Anthony of Egypt; Anthony the Great;
Father of Cenobites; Father of Western Monasticism;
Anthony of the Desert
Born in 251 in a small
village in Egypt.
When he was twenty
years old, his parents
died. They left him a
large estate and placed
him in charge of the
care of his younger
sister.
Anthony felt
overwhelmed
and
turned to God in prayer.
About six months later,
he heard this quotation
of Jesus from the
Gospel: “Go, sell what
you own and give the
money to the poor, and
you will have treasure in
heaven” (Mark 10:21).
He took the words as a
personal message in
answer to his prayer for guidance. He sold most
possessions keeping only enough to support his sister and
himself and gave the money to people in need. Anthony
decided to become a hermit. He begged an elderly hermit
to teach him the spirtual life and also visited other hermits
to learn each one’s most outstanding virtue. Anthony
immured himself in a ruin to servie God more perfectly.
Here the devils assaulted him furiously, but his courage
never failed, and he overcame them all by confidence in
God and by the sign of the cross. His admirers became so
many and so insistent that he was persuaded to found two
monasteries for them. These were the first monasteries
ever founded, and St. Anthony is, therefore, the father of
cenobites of monks. St. Anthony told his monks: “When,
therefore, the demons come by night to you and wish to tell
the future, or say ‘We are the angles,’ give no heed, for
they lie… But if they shamelessly stand their ground,
capering and change their forms of appearance, fear them
not, nor shrink, nor heed them as though they were good
spirits. For the presence either of the good or evel by the
help of God can easily be distinguished. The vision of the
holy ones is not fraught with distraction: ‘For they will not
strive, nor cry, nor shall anyone hear their voice’ (Matthew
12:19; Isaiah 42:2). But it comes quietly and gently that an
immediate joy, gladness, and courage arise in the soul.
For the Lord who is our joy is with them, and the power of
God the Father." He is said to have lived until the age of
105, when he died peacefully in a cave on Mount Kolzim
near the Red Sea.

Prayer of entrusting the Church to
Mary, Mother of God
O Mother of all peoples; you know all their sufferings and
their hopes. You maternally feel all their struggles between
good and evil, between the light and the darkness, which
shake the world. Receive our cry, directed in the Holy
Spirit straight to your Heart and with the love of the Mother
and Handmaid of the Lord, embrace the individuals and
peoples which most look for embrace, together with the
individuals and peoples to whose trust you attend in a
particular way. The entire human family under your
maternal protection. With outflows of affection, O Mother,
we entrust it to you. May the time of peace and liberty
approach for all, the time of truth, justice, and hope. Amen.
The Sanctity of Life
Believe
The wondrous works of Mighty God are past our mortal
understanding.
The Holy Spirit quickened John the Baptist
as yet unborn and while within her womb
His mother bore Him,
to know and greet His Lord;
and tho’ He could not speak
that Name, by all adored,
He stirred and leapt in salutation
the while Elizabeth, with Mary standing by,
observed the miracle, in hushed and whispered wonder.
If ye, O faithful ones, because the flesh is weak,
from duty oftentimes are turning,
yet if your hearts with love for Him are burning
then God will give you strength to speak,
and courage to proclaim your obligation,
yea, heartily, with love and adoration.
- from Bach’s Cantata for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary
The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against
their children and women against men. It has portrayed the
greatest of gifts – a child – as a competitor, an intrusion,
and an inconvenience. –
Mother Theresa
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
When the people of the future write the story of our times,
they will ponder how it could have happened in the land of
“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” that the lives of
so many tiny innocents were ended before they could draw
the first breath that was their due.
Life is sacred. Life is God’s mysterious gift and warrants
our highest regard and respect. Women are endowed as
partners with God in the creation of life. Abortion has
become an abominable ritual that negates a woman’s most
glorious role and debases human life. Abortion is an act of
violence against women and against the unborn.
The little bodies of the unborn are gruesomely destroyed
without any anesthesia, although it is documented that they
are more sensitive to pain than are fully born humans. The
innocents are as irreverently discarded as the daily rubbish.
Million of women, abandoned by their families and loved
ones during their time of need, make the unnatural, tragic
choice of abortion. How can a civilized people endure this?
Since 1973, when abortion on demand became legal in
our country, 47+ million truly innocents have lost their right
to life at the hands of those who, by nature and by calling,
should have been their protectors. There is a bloody stain
upon our souls.
Children, who escape such a horrible fate, grow up
knowing they live in a land where the killing of inconvenient
or imperfect babies is celebrated.
Many of our politicians cannot win election until they
proclaim their support for abortion, euphemistically known
as “Choice”, as those who embrace such a repulsive
choice, dare not use its repulsive name.
Although we demand various protections for sundry
groups of people, places, animals, we seem unconcerned
to protect the most vulnerable of all humanity - - the
unborn. Nature demands they receive that most basic
human right, the right to life.
excerpt – Edna Barney (2003)
