VOCATION DISCERNMENT
A vocation is all about love. A vocation is a life of love in
a concrete, particular form because love is always concrete
and particular. A vocation begins with Christ’s love for you.
In that love for you He is calling you to a particular form of
life. This love involves first His total gift of Himself to you,
and then in response, your total gift of yourself to Him.
After all, He tells us in the Gospel according to St. John,
“You did not choose me, but I chose you” (Jn 15: 16). His
choice for you is what makes a vocation different from an
“occupation” or a “career.” You can choose an occupation
or a career for yourself, but a vocation (from the Latin verb
vocare, “to call”) is HIS choice for you, and which He invites
you to undertake for love of Him. Often we are taught to
ask, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” or “What life
will I choose?” The better way to think is, “What does
Jesus want for me?” - “What life will bring Jesus the
greatest glory?” And ultimately to say, “I want what Jesus
wants.”
A vocation is the concrete life He has chosen for you, and
which has been specifically created for you. He is God and
therefore knows which life that will be the best way to bring
about your salvation, your happiness and His greatest
glory. His call will completely fulfill you as a man and a
father. A vocation means to be sent by Jesus on a mission
to help Him bring His salvation to the world, and so will call
for much love, heroism and sacrifice on your part. He loves
you and has chosen you. His love gives you the ability to
love Him in return. The key to discovering your vocation is
first to allow Jesus to show His tender love to you. This
love will make you capable of loving Him in return.

Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger

Page 5
Memorial May 9
th
AKA Caroline Gerhardinger
Born June 20, 1797 at Regensberg,
German, coming from a working class
family and educated by the Canonesses of
Saint Augustine until 1809 when religious
orders were closed by decree of the
Bavarian government. Caroline decided to
start a new religious order devoted to God
and Christian education. In 1828 the
Vatican got concessions from the Bavarian government,
and many religious communities re-opened. Caroline and
other sisters moved into a refurbished convent, and started
the order that was to become the School Sisters of Notre
Dame. She took the name of Teresa in religious life but
was soon called Teresa of Jesus because of her devotion
to the True Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
Antonius of Florence - Memorial May 10
th
AKA People’s Prelate; Protector of the Poor
When Antonius first tried to join the
Dominicans he was refused due to his
poor health. When he persisted, the
prior told him he could only enter if he
could recite the whole of canon law from
memory; a year later, in 1405, after
spending his time in study, he recited it
and was admitted. As a priest he worked for the reforms of
Blessed John Dominic. He was Vicar of the convent of
Foligno in 1414. He was a member of the Council of
Florence, which sought to end the schism between the
churches of the east and west. He became Vicar-General
of the Dominicans and Archbishop of Florence, Italy in
1446. He wrote a biography of Blessed John Dominic, a
history of the world and a reference work on moral
theology.
Francis of Girolamo - Memorial May 11th
Born 1641 at Grottaglie, Apulia, near
Taranto, Italy.
At age 16 Francis studied the humanities
and philosophy at the Jesuit college of
Taranto, Italy. He was ordained a parish
priest at Naples, Italy on March 18, 1666,
and was a rural missionary in and around
Naples for 40 years. He was a successful
and effective preacher, ministering in
prisons, brothels, and galleys.
He
converted Moor and Turkish prisoners of war. He rescued
children from dangerous and degrading situations. He
organized laymen into a group called Oratio della Missione
to help fellow Jesuit missioners.
St Gisella - Memorial May 7th
AKA Gizella Gisele
Born in the 11
th
century, St Gisella was
the sister of King St. Henry, emperor of
Germany. She was also the wife of St.
Stephen of Hungary and first Queen of
Hungary. After a life of using her position
for charity, she retired to the convent at
Passau in modern Germany.
St. Benedict II – Memorial May 8
th
Born in Rome, Italy, Papal Ascension June
26, 684.
He was a bible scholar, Priest and Pope.
Waiting for imperial confirmation caused
the delay in his ascension. He obtained
the decree that abolished imperial
confirmation of popes.
He adopted
Constantine’s two sons.
Fought
Monothelitism. Restored many churches in
Rome, and endowed deaconries to care for the poor.
Remember Our Lady on Mother’s Day
Blessed art thou among women
John 19: 26
Jesus makes Mary the Mother of us all as He dies on the
Cross by saying, “Behold your mother.” Jesus did not say,
“John, behold your mother” because He gave Mary to all of
us, His beloved disciples. All the words that Jesus spoke
on the Cross had a divine purpose.
