St. Catherine of Siena
At the last excerpt: St. Catherine followed an approved
rule of life in the spirit of St. Dominic, wearing a Dominican
habit, but remained living at home.
The next three years Catherine increased her personal
asceticism, eating and sleeping very little and leaving her
home only for the nearby Dominican church, where she
attended daily Mass and sought the spiritual direction of the
friars. She enjoyed an almost continual sense of the
presence of Christ, interspersed with violent temptations
from the devil. At times Catherine endured long periods of
feeling completely abandoned by God, and she once
prayed, “O Lord, where were You when my heart was so
sorely vexed with foul and hateful temptations?” She heard
a voice saying, “Daughter, I was in your heart, fortifying you
by grace.”
This time in her life culminated when, in her twentieth
year, Catherine was given the rare grace of “mystical
espousal” to the Lord. While praying in her room, Jesus
Christ, accompanied by His mother and many of the
heavenly hosts, appeared to Catherine. The Blessed
Mother took her hand and held it up to Christ, as He placed
a ring on Catherine’s finger and espoused her to Himself.
(This ring would be visible only to Catherine the rest of her
life as a reminder of the abiding presence of Jesus). “Be of
good courage”, He told her; “You are now armed with a
faith that will overcome all temptations.” Catherine soon
was made aware that she was to go and serve Him by
serving her family and her neighbors.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
The bottom line and the ultimate concern of humanity;
Jesus is the Way to the Father. If I have this faith, I can still
have all the other things besides. I can still play tennis,
take care of my garden, enjoy my friends, and all the other
external things. However, I have got to know that Jesus is
truly present in the Eucharist, because He is my salvation –
my way home. He is the way to the Father; Jesus alone
will open the gate to Heaven. If I have this understanding,
all the other things will come.

Adult Bible Study
“From Adam to Jesus – A Journey
through the Bible”
What is the story of salvation? Do you
know the people and places of the Holy
Bible, but wonder what they have to do
with the big picture? Would you like to
learn about Adam, Noah, Abraham,
Moses, David, Jesus, Peter and Paul?
This Bible study is an introduction to the main story of the
Bible: the History of Salvation.
Through this Bible study, you will easily learn:
► What is the Bible and how is it organized?
► How to read and study the Bible?
► Who are the main characters of the Bible?
► What are the major events of the Bible?
Using the Holy Bible, the Catechism, and the wisdom of the
Church Fathers, along with Scott Hahn’s “A Father Who
Keeps His Promises: God’s Covenant Love in Scripture
and Jeff Cavins’ “The Great Adventure” we will explore the
passages of the Holy Bible with our eyes toward the big
picture of Salvation History.

Save The Date! Weekend of November 11th
A book signing by Father Cliff Ermatinger,
a Chicago native, who visited us this past
Holy Week, is a simple priest of many
hats. A Thomist, Fr. Ermatinger is a gritty
rugby player, a regarded bagpiper, an
enthusiast of P.G. Wodehouse and the
Three Stooges, as well as an
accomplished linguist: he fluently speaks
English, Spanish, Italian, Latin and
German. Above all, Fr. Ermatinger is a
faithful priest who is passionate and ardent about his work;
“I’m a priest of Jesus Christ and that’s all I really want to
be.” He has written a new book, Common Nonsense: 25
Fallacies about Life and he will be here at St. Catherine’s
next weekend to preach at all the Masses and hold a book
signing. The book is not only a great read, but also a great
Christmas present! Common Nonsense captures the
essence of twenty-five secular arguments and displays
their fundamental claims in a straightforward fashion,
revealing the absurd and even comical ideas from which
they stem. Common Nonsense is a vehicle that sets the
Catholic perspective in today’s morally ambiguous society.
Moreover, Common Nonsense helps engender a deeper
understanding of the Church as well as cultivate a deeper,
personal relationship with God.

The Icon of Divine Mercy
On the weekend of December 9
th
, the
Icon of Divine Mercy will be visiting our
parish. This particular image is a replica
of the icon of Divine Mercy displayed in
Krakow, Poland where the late, Holy
Father, John Paul II dedicated the whole
world to Divine Mercy. This is a true icon
painted for the Diocese of Arlington, by
Polish artist, Anna Sekowska who fasted
and prayed during the creation of the
icon. This icon will remain with us for
one week, giving us the unique
opportunity to pray together as a parish for the healing of
families. Accompanying the icon will be five smaller
replicas of the icon. These replicas will go to five families
in our parish who have agreed to pray one rosary and one
Divine Mercy chaplet each day that the icon remains in
their possession. All families are encouraged to participate
by taking one of the prayer cards with the same image that
will be provided by the Office for Family Life and to unite
their prayers with everyone in the diocese for peace and
healing in families.

What is a Patron Saint?
Patron saints are chosen as special protectors or guardians
over areas of life. These areas may include occupations,
illnesses, churches, countries, and causes – anything that
is important to us. The earliest records show that people
and churches were named after apostles and martyrs as
early as the fourth century. Recently, the popes have
named patron saints but patron’s can be chosen by other
individuals or groups as well. Patron saints are often
chosen today because an interest, talent, or event in their
lives overlaps a special area. For example, St. Francis of
Assisi loved nature and so he is patron of ecologists. St.
Francis de Sales was a writer and so he is patron of
journalists and writers. St. Clare of Assisi was named
patron of television because one Christmas when she was
too ill to leave her bed she saw and heard Christmas Mass
– even though it was taking place miles away. Angels can
also be named as patron saints. A patron saint can help us
when we follow the example of that saint’s life and when
we ask for that saint’s intercessory prayers to God.

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome
Today marks the anniversary of the
dedication of the cathedral church of
Rome, on land owned by the
Laterani family, by Pope Sylvester I
(31 December), 9 November 324.
Honored as the Episcopal seat of
the pope as bishop of Rome, it is
the “mother and head of all churches of Rome and the
world” and residence of the popes from the 4
th
c. until their
moving to Avignon (1309); site of five ecumenical councils;
dedicated to the Savior, later to John the Baptist.

prestigious film festival award in the world, the “People’s
Choice Award” at the huge Toronto Film Festival. It is a
story that deeply touches the human heart with the truth
about the beauty, value and dignity of human life and love.
For a small, independently produced film to succeed at the
box office, it is crucial that it has very strong revenues, and
large turnouts for the opening weekends at theaters. So
please help spread the word to others to go see Bella and
be sure to see it yourself!
