A Word from the Pastor
Ours is a pilgrim faith. This concept is deeply rooted in
traditions of the Church and indeed in how we view the
Church herself. The Catechism cites St. Augustine,
stating, “the Church progresses on her pilgrimage amidst
this world’s persecutions and God’s consolations.” The
mother of Constantine the Great, St. Helena, made a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem where the location of the Cross on
which our Lord hung was revealed to her. Throughout the
early years of the Church, well into the Middle Ages,
Jerusalem was a popular destination for pilgrimages, often
of a penitential nature. King Robert the Bruce of Scotland,
on his death, left instructions that his heart should be taken
to Jerusalem in reparation for his sins. (Sir James Douglas
who was entrusted with the King’s heart only made it as far
as Spain). The shrine of St. James in Compostela Spain
was also a popular site for pilgrimages, and The
Canterbury Tales by Geofrey Chaucer was inspired by
medieval popularity for pilgrimages to the shrine of St.
Thomas à Becket. Lourdes and Fatima are popular
pilgrimage destinations today. This all reflects what St.
Augustine said about the Church as being on her pilgrim
way: we but pass through this world to a far better one.
Next Saturday, October 13
th
, we will have the opportunity
to partake in this ancient practice of our faith by joining
Bishop Loverde for the diocesan pilgrimage to the National
Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
There are many graces to be had by partaking in such a
pilgrimage. We will have the opportunity to pray with
people from all over the diocese, as well as to make use of
the Sacrament of Reconciliation and just be able to spend
time with God in this truly holy place. As we join with the
Bishop for Mass we will be following in the steps of so
many Catholic pilgrims throughout the centuries and be a
part of something so much bigger than ourselves,
something that transcends both time and space and offers
us a glance into eternity.
A bus will be leaving St. Catherine’s at 8:30 a.m. on the
13
th
of October for the Basilica returning about 3:45 in the
afternoon. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule; and, of
course, everyone is welcome to come on their own as well.
One way or the other, please plan on joining our diocesan
pilgrimage.
Pray for our Military Service Personnel
Please keep in your prayers our men and women
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, especially:
Jordan Bowren, Jeff Campbell, Douglas Dillon,
Brendan McCarthy, Mark O’Neil, Matthew Rowell

The Blessed Sacrament
EITHER JESUS IS TRULY PRESENT OR HE IS NOT.
IF HE IS PRESENT, THEN HE REALLY IS.
We know this with simple faith and trust, not with
intellectual reasoning and theological deduction. Then in
faith affirm this word; I believe that Jesus is really present
in the Eucharist. Ponder the truth of Jesus’ presence in the
Eucharist. What a gift it is to know Jesus is truly present in
the Eucharist. This means Jesus, who sits at the right
hand of the Father is present in this wafer of bread. He
comes to us daily to nourish us, to heal us, to sustain us.
This is incredible! This is awesome! The Almighty Savior
humbles himself to come to us under the appearance of
bread and wine at each and every Eucharist. What a
precious gift.

The Icon of Divine Mercy
On the weekend of December 9
th
, the Icon of Divine Mercy
will be visiting our parish. This particular image is a replica
of the icon of Divine Mercy displayed in Krakow, Poland
where the late, Holy Father, John Paul II dedicated the
whole world to Divine Mercy. This is a true icon painted for
the Diocese of Arlington, by Polish artist, Anna Sekowska
who fasted and prayed during the creation of the icon. This
icon will remain with us for one week, giving us the unique
opportunity to pray together as a parish for the healing of
families. Accompanying the icon will be five smaller
replicas of the icon. These replicas will go to five families
in our parish who have agreed to pray one rosary and one
Divine Mercy chaplet each day that the icon remains in
their possession. All families are encouraged to participate
by taking one of the prayer cards with the same image that
will be provided by the Office for Family Life and to unite
their prayers with everyone in the diocese for peace and
healing in families.
