A Word from the Pastor
MCMLVII are the Roman numerals for 1957. Although
1957 was not one of the more momentous years of the last
century, it nevertheless had some significant moments.
Perhaps the highest moment was the launch of the first
successful man-made satellite, Sputnik launched by the
Soviets on October 4
th
1957, it spurred the United States to
intensify its space programme, so that just a decade later
the U.S. launched a man on the Moon. Not quite as lofty
was the emergence of plastic pink flamingo lawn
ornaments in 1957. Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand was first
published in that year and has never been out of print. The
Rome Treaties of March 1957 established the European
Economic Community, or the Common Market, which over
the years evolved into the European Union. And, at 11:30
in the morning, on October 20
th
in Chambley, France I was
born.
In the great scheme of things 50 years is not a long
time, but for an individual man it is, or should be, a seminal
moment to look back on his life’s journey, and see how far
he has come and to realize how much farther he has to go.
My first 25 years were active, visiting ten countries on
three continents with protracted stays in Germany, the
United States and France. A quarter century ago I was a
Legislative Assistant to a member of Congress, with an
undergraduate degree in Philosophy and German, and a
Master’s in International Relations. I had been raised
Lutheran, but seldom went to Church. In worldly terms I
was pretty successful, and it would never have occurred to
me, or anyone who then knew me, that 25 years later I
would be a Catholic Priest.
If my first quarter century was my most traveled in terms
of different countries, my second quarter century has seen
even greater journeying in spiritual terms. At the age of 28
I was received into the Catholic Church. Not too long after
that I heard the Call which I have been striving to follow
ever since. On the way I picked up two more Master’s
degrees and more importantly was ordained a priest. In
worldly terms I may still be seen as successful, but that is
unimportant. I have to admit that I like my “stuff” and my
friends, and my way of Life, while not without challenges, is
on the whole pretty easy. Everything however pales in
significance when I consider the Mark on my soul, which
marks me out for all eternity as a priest of Christ Jesus.
The thought of that humbles me and makes me realize
how very much farther I have to go. Do I have another
quarter century ahead of me? I don’t know. I give thanks
to God for the tremendous blessings He has so gratuitously
showered upon me – my friends, my family and my Faith.
As I celebrate my big L – my 50
th
birthday, I ask all to
pray for me that in whatever time remains to me that I may
be more fully purged of all that might detract me from
Christ, so that by the end of my time on earth I might truly
reflect Him Who is our All.

The Blessed Sacrament
Blessed are we who do not see and yet believe that Jesus
is in the Eucharist. We believe because we are blessed. If
we do not see Jesus in the Eucharist, then we need to ask
for the blessing of faith. “Jesus, Jesus, bless me because
blessed are those who see you, and I want to see you,
Lord.”

through the Bible”
What is the story of salvation? Do you
know the people and places of the Holy
Bible, but wonder what they have to do

► What are the major events of the Bible?
Using the Holy Bible, the Catechism, and the wisdom of the
Church Fathers, along with Scott Hahn’s “A Father Who
Keeps His Promises: God’s Covenant Love in Scripture

The Icon of Divine Mercy
On the weekend of December 9
th
, the
Icon of Divine Mercy will be visiting our
parish. This particular image is a replica
of the icon of Divine Mercy displayed in
Krakow, Poland where the late, Holy
Father, John Paul II dedicated the whole
world to Divine Mercy. This is a true icon
painted for the Diocese of Arlington, by
Polish artist, Anna Sekowska who fasted
and prayed during the creation of the
icon. This icon will remain with us for
one week, giving us the unique
opportunity to pray together as a parish for the healing of
families. Accompanying the icon will be five smaller
replicas of the icon. These replicas will go to five families
in our parish who have agreed to pray one rosary and one
Divine Mercy chaplet each day that the icon remains in
their possession. All families are encouraged to participate
by taking one of the prayer cards with the same image that
will be provided by the Office for Family Life and to unite
their prayers with everyone in the diocese for peace and
healing in families.
