St. Catherine of Siena
At the age of seven St. Catherine privately vowed herself
to the service of God as a virgin. Catherine also embraced
the penitential life, as evidenced by her severe penances
and prolonged fasts. At age twelve she resisted all efforts
by her family to arrange a well-connected marriage for her.
Lapa Benincasa tried in vain to enhance her pretty
daughter’s features and graceful figure in order for her to
attract a good husband. Catherine would have none of
this, and her response to her mother’s efforts was to cut
her long, golden brown hair in protest. Her furious mother
promptly dismissed all the household servants and set
Catherine to do all the work of running the large Benincasa
household. She gave her no private time or place for her
prayers.
True to form, the pious girl lovingly and without complaint
served her family and efficiently carried out all of the
household chores. Jesus appeared to Catherine at this
trying time in her life, and He urged her simply to “turn
inward to the cell of your own soul, and there will be both a
time and a place to find Me always.” He taught her to look
upon her service to the family as though she were serving
His mother and the apostles, and thus she was able to
meet this challenge with grace.

Adult Bible Study
“From Adam to Jesus – A Journey
through the Bible”
What is the story of salvation? Do you
know the people and places of the Holy
Bible, but wonder what they have to do
with the big picture? Would you like to
learn about Adam, Noah, Abraham,
Moses, David, Jesus, Peter and Paul?
This Bible study is an introduction to the main story of the
Bible: the History of Salvation.
Through this Bible study, you will easily learn:
► What is the Bible and how is it organized?
► How to read and study the Bible?
► Who are the main characters of
the Bible?
► What are the major events of
the Bible?
Using the Holy Bible, the
Catechism, and the wisdom of the
Church Fathers, along with Scott
Hahn’s “A Father Who Keeps His
Promises: God’s Covenant Love in Scripture” and Jeff
Cavins’ “The Great Adventure” we will explore the
passages of the Holy Bible with our eyes toward the big
picture of Salvation History.
Two convenient sessions for you to choose from!

Parish Day of Recollection
October 20, 2007
Each one of us has a purpose to fulfill in God’s plan. How
well we do lies in our willingness to give of ourselves.

we respond? This Day may give us the answer. Please
come to hear the Serviam message with Fr. John Hopkins
of the Legionaries of Christ. The day begins with Mass at
9:00 a.m., followed by a series of talks and prayerful

I would like to invite you, your family and friends to join me on our diocesan pilgrimage.

this year’s pilgrimage. We encourage you to spread the word throughout our diocese about this
wonderful spiritual opportunity for all people who form this local church. We also encourage all
parish groups to attend, especially the youth, young adults, RCIA classes, Catholic school and
religious education students and their families.
The pilgrimage includes a procession of the International PilgrimVirgin Statue of Our Lady
