Parish Stewardship
Thank you for your generous offerings of December 6/7,
the regular collection brought in $18,328 and the Poor Box
yielded $300.
A Word from the Pastor
The third Sunday of Advent which we celebrate today is
commonly known as “Gaudete Sunday.” The name comes
from the Introit for the Mass:
Gaudete in Domino Semper,
Iterum dico, gaudete …
Rejoice in the Lord always,
Again I say, rejoice …
Strangely though, the Ordo, (the little book which tells
priests which Mass to celebrate on any given day, and
what the readings and the colour of the vestments are),
makes no mention of the word, “Gaudete.” The Ordo does,
however note the liturgical colour for the day is rose, a
break from the violet used throughout the rest of Advent.
The reason for this change is that Gaudete Sunday
marks the approximate middle of the Advent Season.
Advent is primarily a penitential season, hence the use of
the colour violet. (In earlier times the colour black was
used). The altar and sanctuary are to be sparingly
decorated and the use of greens is preferred to flowers.
The third Sunday of Advent as the midway point offers a
break from the otherwise somber season with rose
vestments and the allowance of flowers in the sanctuary.
The purpose for this is to remind us that the Feast for which
the Season prepares us is a joyful one. Thus the word,
“Gaudete” – Rejoice.
The season of Lent is similarly marked by Laetare
Sunday, the word Laetare also meaning “Rejoice.” Both
seasons are times of expectation and preparation. Both
seasons are times in which we are especially sorrowful and
do penance for our sins. The midpoint break in the
penitential nature of the Advent and Lenten Seasons is to
remind us that although we are rightly sorrowful for our sins
that sorrow should be marked by a yet greater joy that our
Lord loves us despite our sins and offers us salvation in
and through His Body and Blood.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.

a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.

ADVENT WREATH
PRAYER
Third Sunday of Advent
(Gather in silence as the family member chosen, lights
the three candles).
Leader: Lord, God, we thank you for your constant love.
As we prepare for the coming of your Son, may we
recognize all the precious gifts you give us each day.
Family: We are grateful for your constant love!
Leader: We praise you Father with all our hearts, because
in your Son, Jesus you share our human life.
Family: We are grateful for your constant love!
Leader: Lord, accept the gift of our lives, our work, our
play, the small things and the special things, the sad and
the joyful. Take them as a sign of our gratitude.
Family: We are grateful for your constant love!
Leader:
O Lord, our God, everything we are and
everything we have is your gift to us. Forgive us for the
time we have taken you for granted. Remove from our
hearts all sadness which keeps us from feeling the hope
and joy of your Son’s birth.
Family: Amen.
Fourth Sunday of Advent
(Gather in silence as the family member chosen, lights
the four candles).
Leader: We welcome you as you come to us through
those who love us and care for us, may we love them in
return.
Family: Lord Jesus, come and be born in our hearts.
Leader: No one will ever know that you have come to
us, unless they see your presence in the patient care we
have for one another.
Family: Lord Jesus, come and be born in our hearts.
Leader: Just as Mary, your mother, brought you into the
world, help us bring you to each person we meet,
especially the sick and the lonely.
Family: Lord Jesus, come and be born in our hearts.
Leader: All the earth awaits your coming Lord. Fulfill
your promise and come. Let us, like Mary, say “yes” to
your life in our hearts and our homes. We ask this
through Christ, Our Lord.
Family: Amen.
