St. Catherine of Siena
The fourteenth century was a time of great chaos and
social unrest in Italy and within the Church. Class conflicts,
revolutions, and family feuds were common in the Italian
city-states, some of which were staunch anti-papal
associations. Because of Catherine's growing reputation
for holiness and miracles, she was asked to arbitrate many
of these disputes. Her more than four hundred letters to
European kings, princes, churchmen, and political leaders
reveal a prolific letter-writing career. She was quite
successful at settling differences, healing old feuds, and
restoring many rebellious Italian cities to obedience to the
Holy See. By the sheer force of her personality many were
converted to Christ. Some of the most hardened sinners
repented at the mere sight of her. Her gifts of healing were
so powerful that at one time three Dominican priests were
assigned to hear the confessions of those she convinced to
repent and receive the Sacrament of Penance.

Come Unto Me
The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY - THIS IS MY BLOOD
"I Wait For You"
Let the whole of mankind tremble, the whole world shake,
and the heavens exult
when Christ, the Son of the living God, is (present) on the
altar in the hands of a priest.
O admirable heights and sublime lowliness!
O sublime humility! O humble sublimity!
That the Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God,
so humbles Himself that for our salvation He hides Himself
under the little form of bread!
Look, brothers, at the humility of God
and pour out your hearts before Him.
Humble yourselves, as well,
that you may be exalted by Him.
Therefore, hold back nothing of yourselves for yourselves
so that He Who gives Himself totally to you may receive
you totally.
- St. Francis of Assisi

The Lenten Season
The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the
holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has a double
character, namely to prepare both catechumens and
faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery.
The
catechumens, both with the rite of election and scrutinies,
and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the
sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more
attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare
themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal
promise.
Stations of the Cross will be offered each Friday during
Lent at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. Take time to participate in
this venerable tradition of the Church and meditate on our
Lord's sacrifice for our sins.
Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence are as follows:
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of penance
observed by both fasting (only one full meal during the day)
and abstinence from meat. All other Fridays during Lent
are days of abstinence; we forgo the eating of meat to
make ourselves conscious of our Lord's sacrifice of Himself
for our sins. The law of fasting is binding for those who are
18 years old but not yet 60; the law of abstinence is binding
for those 14 years of age and older.

Bishop's Lenten Appeal
Led By The Holy Spirit
Many of you have received Bishop Loverde's letter
requesting your financial support of the 2008 Bishop's
Lenten Appeal. Please consider making a generous
pledge to this important annual campaign.
The Bishop's Lenten Appeal funds help to support
diocesan offices and ministries that serve tens of
thousands of people each year. All parishes benefit from
services that are received from the Diocese of Arlington.
From encouragement of vocations, to support of
seminarians, to continuing education of priests, to training
of catechists, the Appeal funds those things that parishes
cannot do on their own.
Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you
consider your annual pledge to the Bishop's Lenten
Appeal. Make a sacrificial gift in gratitude for the gifts that
God has given to you.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
(1) Jesus is Condemned to Death
It is after ten in the morning.
The trial is moving to its close.
There has been no conclusive
evidence. The judge knows that
his enemies have handed Jesus
over to him out of envy, and he
tries an absurd move: a choice
between Barabbas, a criminal
accused of robbery and murder,
and Jesus, who says he is
Christ.
The people choose
Barabbas, and Pilate exclaims:
What am I to do then, with Jesus? They all reply: Crucify
him!
(2) Jesus Takes Up His Cross
Outside the city, to the northwest of
Jerusalem, there is a little hill:
Golgotha is its name in Aramaic;
locus Calvariae, in Latin: the place of
skulls or Calvary.
Offering no
resistance, Jesus gives himself up to
the execution of the sentence. He is
to be spared nothing, and upon his
shoulders falls the weight of the
ignominious cross.
(3)Jesus Falls The First Time
The heavy Cross cuts and tears
into Our Lord's shoulders. The
crowd has swollen into a
multitude, and the legionaries can
scarcely contain the angry,
surging mob that flows through
the streets and alleyways of
Jerusalem. The worn out body of Jesus staggers now
beneath the huge Cross. A sharp pain pierces the soul of
Jesus; Our Lord falls to the ground exhausted.
(4) Jesus Is Met By His Blessed Mother
No sooner has Jesus risen from his
first fall than he meets his Blessed
Mother, standing by the wayside
where He is passing. With immense
love Mary looks at Jesus, and Jesus at
his Mother. Their eyes meet, and
each heart pours into the other its own
deep sorrow.
(5) Simon Of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry His Cross
Jesus is exhausted. His footsteps
become more and more unsteady, and
the soldiers are in a hurry to be
finished. So, when they are going
through the Judgment Gate, they take
hold of a man, a farmer called Simon,
and they force him to carry the Cross of
Jesus.
(6) The Face Of Jesus Is Wiped By Veronica
A woman, Veronica by name,
makes her way through the crowd,
with a white linen cloth folded in her
hands, and with this she reverently
wipes the face of Jesus. Our Lord
leaves the impression of his Holy
Face on the three parts of that veil.
(7) Jesus Falls A Second Time
Outside the walls of the city, the body of Jesus again gives
way through weakness, and he
falls a second time, amid the
shouts of the crowd and the rough
handling of the soldiers. Infirmity
of body and bitterness of soul
have caused Jesus to fall again.
All the sins of men - mine too -
weigh down on his Sacred
Humanity.

The Holy Father's Prayer Intention for
February 2008
General:
That the mentally handicapped may not be marginalized
but respected and lovingly helped to live in a way worthy of
their physical and social condition.
Mission:
That Institutes of Consecrated Life, so flourishing in
mission countries, may rediscover the missionary
dimension and, faithful to the radical choice of Gospel
counsels, be generous in bearing witness to Christ and
proclaiming Him to the ends of the earth.
