A Word from Fr. Drummond
While doing the Monday newspaper crossword puzzle for
this past Monday I came across one hint that read:
"February 14 figure." Immediately I thought, "St. Valentine,
of course." So imagine my shock when the answer to the
clue was not Valentine, but Eros! That is a very sad
example of how fallen our society has become. It has been
a long time now that the "St." has fallen off of St.
Valentine's Day, in common parlance, and with this has
come a very real loss of innocence.
All that is known of the actual St. Valentine is that he was
a priest who was martyred in the third century, and as
such, that his name had been honoured throughout the
Church down through the ages. The story that he was
imprisoned as a Christian and passed notes of
encouragement to other Christian prisoners is a charming
Victorian fiction from which comes the tradition of
exchanging "Valentines," and the association of the day of
February 14
th
with Love.
The Love that the real St. Valentine stood for was the
Love of Christ; a Love testified to by the shedding of his
blood, a Love that very appropriately symbolized the
Sacred Heart. If society could see the exchange of heart-
shaped cards in terms of that Love, it would be a
completely different day than it now is.
February 14
th
is marked by a sharp increase in the price
and sale of roses, as well as increased sales of chocolate.
(Could St. Valentine be the patron saint of florists and
dentists?) If that were all, it wouldn't be so bad. But, alas,
the Victorian lacey heart-shaped cards have given way to
lacey underwear decorated with hearts, and romance
degenerated to concupiscence.
Perhaps when the Church Fathers changed the Liturgical
Calendar following the Second Vatican Council they
allotted February 14
th
to St. Cyril and St. Methodius in an
effort to let St. Valentine rest in peace.
Pray for our Military Service Personnel
Please keep in your prayers our men
and women serving in dangerous
parts of the world, especially:
Jordan Bowren, Jeff Campbell,
Douglas Dillon, Christopher Frediani,
Joe Gibson, Chad Godfrey, Bryan
Grimes, Erik Hood, Brian Horn,
Brendan McCarthy,
Matt McKee, Chris Nagle,
Mark O'Neil, Matthew Rowell.

The Lenten Season
Prayer - Fasting - Almsgiving
Fasting is usually mentioned along with prayer and
almsgiving (or charity). By controlling the passions of the
body, we free our souls for prayer. And by refraining from
eating, we free up food or money that we can give to those
less fortunate than ourselves.
The three spiritual
disciplines go hand-in-hand, and the Church calls us to
practice all three together, especially during the season of
Lent.
Stations of the Cross will be offered each Friday during
Lent at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. Take time to participate in
this venerable tradition of the Church and meditate on our
Lord's sacrifice for our sins.
Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence are as follows:
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of penance
observed by both fasting (only one full meal during the day)
and abstinence from meat. All other Fridays during Lent
are days of abstinence; we forgo the eating of meat to
make ourselves conscious of our Lord's sacrifice of Himself
for our sins. The law of fasting is binding for those who are
18 years old but not yet 60; the law of abstinence is binding
for those 14 years of age and older.
V. Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi.
[We adore you O Christ, and we bless you.]
R. Quia per sanctam crucem tuam redemisti mundum.
[Because by your Holy Cross You have redeemed the
world.]

Vocation Prayer:
May all those who are considering what state in life Jesus
may be calling them to find courage and conviction in the
life and prayer, the passion, death and resurrection of Him
who sacrificed Himself that all might have life to the full.

temptations from the world, the flesh and the devil, may
those being called be strengthened by the power of His
Holy Spirit in their "yes" to Him. Amen.
