St. Catherine of Siena
Public opinion in Siena and the surrounding towns and
villages was sharply divided over what might be the driving
force behind this young and energetic woman. Many
people considered Catherine a saint, while others
denounced her as a fanatic or hypocrite and even
drummed up false charges against her. She was
eventually summoned to Florence to appear before a
general Chapter of Dominicans, where all these charges
were disproved. Not long after this, Raymond of Capua
was sent by the Dominicans to Siena in order to be the
lector at the Dominican church there. He also was
appointed to be Catherine's confessor and spiritual
director, and thus began the pious association of these two
future saints. Himself destined to be one of the great
fourteenth-century Dominicans, Blessed Raymond of
Capua became one of Catherine's champions and
disciples, and after her death he was one of her first
biographers. He was later elected Master General of the
Dominican Order, which he helped to revitalize.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY - THIS IS MY BLOOD
Further words to reflect upon:
I know I wouldn't be able to work one week if it were not for
the continual force coming from Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament. In our society we begin our day with Mass and
Holy Communion and we end it with one full hour of
Adoration. We have permission from the different bishops
to expose the Blessed Sacrament. All of us know that
unless we believe and can see Jesus in the appearance of
bread on the altar, we will not be able to see Him in the
distressing disguise of the poor. Therefore, these two
loves are but one in Jesus.

The Flight into Egypt
The flight into Egypt describes an event in the Gospel of
Matthew, in which Joseph fled to Egypt with his wife
Mary and Jesus, after the visit of the magi, having been
warned by an angel that Herod had planned a massacre
in order to kill Jesus, because a prophesy seemed to say
that Jesus may grow up to be a threat to Herod's throne.
Matthew is repeatedly careful to describe Joseph only
as the husband of Jesus' mother, rather than as Jesus'
father. Egypt was the logical place to seek refuge, as it
was outside the dominions of King Herod, and
throughout the Old Testament it was the standard place
of exile for those unsafe in Palestine. At the time in
which the story of the flight is set, both Egypt and
Palestine were part of the Roman Empire, making travel
between them easy and relatively safe. Throughout
Egypt there are a number of churches and shires that
claim to mark an area where the family stayed. The
most important of these is the church of Abu Serghis that
claims to be built on the place the family had its home.
From the Vatican
The Holy Father's Prayer Intention for
January 2008
General:
That the Church may strengthen her commitment to full
visible unity in order to manifest ever more clearly her
nature as a community of love in which is reflected the
communion of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Mission:
That the Church in Africa, preparing to celebrate the
second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for
Africa, may continue to be a sign and channel of
reconciliation and justice in a continent still suffering from
war, exploitation and poverty.
