A Word from the Pastor
Pius XII – Part II
The theological accomplishments of Pope Pius XII are all
too often lost or overshadowed by the controversy of his
wartime record. Even as he was striving to save as many
lives – Catholic and Jewish as possible – from the nazi
terror, Pope Pius XII was also laying the groundwork for the
reforms of the Second Vatican Council. In 1943 the Pope
released Mystici Corporis Christi on the nature of the
Church which the Pope identifies as the mystical body of
Christ, distinguishing it from the physical body of Christ as
well as from any other body whether moral or physical,
stating this is so because Christ is founder and head of the
Church as well as its saviour and sustainer. In the same
year the Pope also released the encyclical Divino Offlante
Spiritu a landmark work on Catholic scriptural exegesis. In
1947 he released Mediator Dei, which encouraged greater
lay participation in the Mass, and shortly thereafter he
reformed the liturgy of Holy Week. Towards the end of his
papacy Pius XII shortened the required Eucharistic Fast
from midnight before Mass to a straightforward three hours
so as to encourage more frequent reception of the
Eucharist. This supposedly archconservative pope was, in
fact, something of a reformer.
At the time of his death in October 1959, Pope Pius XII
was greatly revered and recognized as one of the moral
bulwarks of the 20
th
century. His vilification began in the
early 1960’s with the play The Deputy by Rolf Hochhuth a
young Protestant whose thesis was that Pius XII was
responsible for the extermination of the Jews! In a true
twist of irony Hochhuth got his title from a line by
Goebbhels’ who referred to the Pope as “the deputy of the
Jew-God.”
Ignoring the implication of Goebbhels’
statement, Hochhuth attempts to portray the Pope as the
deputy of the nazis in their quest to exterminate the Jews.
Hochhuth’s world is surely one turned on its head.
Unfortunately Hochhuth libelous theme has become the
lodestar of anti-Catholics and a minor industry of books
slandering the Pope has ensued. Perhaps because of our
fallen nature, people are more inclined to believe a lie than
to believe the truth. The massive output of work attacking
Pope Pius XII and its ferocity can only have one source –
the devil. The person and figure of Pope Pius XII stands in
sharp contrast to today’s culture of death.
His life shines out in the darkness of contemporary
society, and wherever there are men who seek the Truth
the name of Pope Pius XII will be revered.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Can You Watch One Hour With Me?
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
Holy Hour is at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration is every Wednesday and
every First Friday, beginning after the 9:00 a.m. Mass and
ending the following morning just before the 9:00 a.m.
Mass.
Parish Stewardship
Thank you for your generous offerings of May 24/25. The
regular collection brought in $17,025 and the Poor Box
yielded $219.
Friendly Reminder
This is a reminder to Parishioners to please use envelopes
for an accurate accounting of contributions. If you are not
using envelopes please make a note of your envelope
number on your check. To request envelopes please
contact the parish office. Please remember that loose cash
is not accountable for tax purposes. Thank you for your
generosity.
Summer Parish Financial Needs
We hope those traveling this summer enjoy their vacation
time. But please remember that the summer months
always present a challenge for the parish budget because
of fluctuating attendance at Sunday Mass. Although it’s
great to get away on vacation, don’t forget the needs of St.
Catherine’s while you are on holiday. Why not consider
giving electronically? The donation is made automatically
and you do not need to worry about the details. Forms
may be obtained from the parish office. Currently St.
Catherine’s offers the option of once a month, made on the
20th of each month through electronic transfer by a credit
card.

The student support team from Siena Academy

The Children’s House North
The map of Europe is being used more often because a
student is going to Hungary this summer. The bead-chains
are still popular. Dominic, (a student) has been doing the
thousand-chain. Amelma, (another student) has been
working on the phonagram booklets. The children enjoy
playing outside in the nice weather.
The Children’s House South
The students are excited because there is finally soccer
this week! The children are using the finger charts, which
are still popular to help solve math equations. The land
and water form material is a clay scale of mountains and a
lake, snaking in-between the mountains. The children pour
water into the “river” and learn about the difference of water
and land. They are still using the movable alphabet to write
book reports.
Toddlers
Tip[ # 25 taken from 100 Child Development Tips. Slow
down and work at your child’s pace. Do not over-
schedule the day. Permit your child to fully absorb upon
his or her activities.
Elementary
The students are preparing another play called “A
Midsummer’s Night Dream.” Miss Cheryl was back for a
couple of days, and the children gave her a warm welcome.
The parable of the leaven in the Atrium is now popular.
The nine to thirteen years old students wrote some Haiku’s,
(a form of poetry) for an assignment, and here are two
entries:

Vocations Awareness
Some white-collar jobs are more challenging than others
Vocation Prayer:
Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to
those You have called the willingness and generosity of
spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their
talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly
the faith of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen.

life of Christ in you to become one of single-hearted
service as a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life?
