A Word from Fr. Drummond
The fourth or middle Sunday of Lent is known as Laetare
Sunday, and gets its name from the opening of the introit:
Laetare Jerusalem, or Rejoice Jerusalem. Technically
the middle of Lent is the Thursday before Laetare Sunday.
In the early centuries of the Church that Thursday was
observed by a tempering of Lenten practices, specifically
by allowing flowers to decorate the Sanctuary and by
substituting the Lenten violet vestments for rose coloured
ones. The purpose of the muted rejoicing allowed on that
day was to encourage the faithful in their Lenten
disciplines, a way of saying “We’re halfway there!” Around
the seventh century these practices were moved to the
fourth Sunday.
Under the old rite deacons and sub-deacons would put
off the use of dalmatics for the Lenten Season using
instead folded chausables! But on Laetare Sunday they
would don rose coloured dalmatics. The use of rose
coloured vestments is now optional. Personally I prefer the
violet or purple vestments, but on occasion I do use the
rose coloured ones. Regardless of the colour of the
vestment, it is a day to rejoice, knowing that we are halfway
toward Easter.
God our Father
,
Your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world
and brought mankind the gift of reconciliation by the
suffering and death He endured.
Teach us, the people who bear His name, to follow the
example He gave us.
May our faith, hope and charity turn hatred into love,
conflict into peace, and death to eternal Life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lenten Season
Prayer – Fasting – Almsgiving
Stations of the Cross will be offered each Friday during
Lent at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. Take time to participate in
this venerable tradition of the Church and meditate on our
Lord’s sacrifice for our sins.
Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence are as follows:
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of penance
observed by both fasting (only one full meal during the day)
and abstinence from meat. All other Fridays during Lent
are days of abstinence; we forgo the eating of meat to
make ourselves conscious of our Lord’s sacrifice of Himself
for our sins. The law of fasting is binding for those who are
18 years old but not yet 60; the law of abstinence is binding
for those 14 years of age and older.
Pro-Life Committee Update
The St. Catherine’s Pro-Life Committee is increasing its
efforts and asks parishioners to consider joining in one or
more of the following activities:
?Each Wednesday evening St. Catherine’s sponsors a
Holy Hour for the Parish. It is a powerful hour with Christ.
Please consider attending and offering prayers for the
unborn and making the Holy Hour part of your weekly
schedule.
?The Committee has been given one bookshelf in the
Narthex of the Church and will begin placing Pro-Life
literature and books, available both free and for purchase.
(Note: The items are not designed to shock, but to
educate.)
?The Committee has established a weekly email
distribution. We send out an update on our activities and
provide an article on pro-life issues. Please consider
joining the distribution roster. Again, we will not broadcast
graphic images.
?The Committee has re-established a Rosary group to visit
the Falls Church Abortion Clinic on the last Saturday
morning of every month from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m.,
(approximately ninety minutes). This is not a call to do any
counseling at the clinic; this is simply a Rosary group.
Please consider joining us. I will be glad to meet
participants at the Church on Saturday mornings at 7:00
a.m. and serve as a driver to the clinic. This is good work!
and not daunting. I will show you if you join me.
?The Committee will sponsor Pro-Life speakers throughout
the year. If you have a recommendation on a strong
speaker, I would like to hear from you.
Please give thought and prayer to participating. At a
minimum, please consider joining our weekly distribution
group.
If you have any questions, please contact me at

of
Siena
Parishioner, Marc Morano will
present a fascinating talk and
Power Point challenging man-made global warming fears.
Marc works for the U.S. Senate Environment & Public
Works Committee (EPW) for the GOP minority. The EPW
Committee released a December 20, 2007 report titled
“Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global
Warming Claims in 2007”. Marc’s talk will show the “other
side” of the climate change debate that you don’t often hear
about in the media. Excerpt from Senate report of skeptical
scientists: “Over 400 prominent scientists from more than
two dozen countries recently voiced significant objections
to major aspects of the so-called “consensus” on man-
made global warming. These scientists, many of whom are
current and former participants in the UN IPCC
(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), criticized
the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice
President Al Gore.
Marc urges all parents of school-age children to attend the
talk and find out why scientists from around the world are
now dissenting from the media-promoted view that the
global warming “debate is over”.
