St. Catherine of Siena
Catherine saw that there were three main wounds afflicting
the Church in her day: the corruption of many of the clergy,
the disunity of Christian Europe, and the absence of the
popes from Rome. Regarding the papacy, history best
knows Catherine for convincing Pope Gregory XI to return
to Rome, thus ending seventy-five years of papal residence
in Avignon, France. In an effort to unite feuding princes
around a noble cause, Catherine had been a firm supporter
of this Pope’s campaign for another crusade to free the
Holy Sepulchre from the Turks, and this eventually led to
her correspondence with Gregory himself. He was ready to
return to Rome, but had been largely deterred by the
French cardinals. Catherine strongly encouraged Gregory
to return, telling him, “My soul, which is united with God,
burns with thirst for your salvation, for the reformation of
the Church, and the happiness of the whole world. But it
seems to me that God reveals no other remedy than
peace.” In 1376 Catherine finally met Pope Gregory face-
to-face in the papal palace in Avignon. She boldly
exclaimed, “Fulfill what you have promised,” reminding him
of a vow he had once taken with God and had never
disclosed to anyone. Gregory considered this infused
knowledge as a supernatural sign from God, and he acted
upon it at once, returning to Rome early in 1377.

Come Unto Me
The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
Holy Hour is at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration is every Wednesday and
every First Friday, beginning after the 9:00 a.m. Mass and
ending the following morning just before the 9:00 a.m.
Mass.
Papal Blessings and Papal Audiences
Those interested in receiving a Papal Blessing
for a special occasion (birthday, wedding or
wedding anniversary), or are traveling to Rome
and would like to attend a general Papal

of the occasion to allow plenty of time to process
paperwork. The recipient of the Papal Blessing will receive
a beautiful certificate.

subject to the Holy Father’s Health, travels and weekly
schedule.

These
brothers and sisters of ours are enduring hardships at this
moment because of the volatile situation in their home
country. At one time Christians in the Holy Land comprised
more than 30% of the population, now there is less than
1% because of persecution. As Christians, please
consider supporting our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.
You can help them by purchasing some of these exquisite
carvings. For more information, please contact Feras at

Thank you in advance for all your help and support!

The Image of the Divine Mercy
The earliest element of the Devotion to the Divine Mercy
revealed to St. Faustina was the Image. On February 22
nd
,
1931 Jesus appeared to her with rays radiating from His
heart and said,
“Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with
the signature: Jesus I trust in You. I desire that this
image be venerated, first in your chapel, and
throughout the world. (Dairy 47) I promise that the
soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also
promise victory over its enemies already here on earth,
especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it
as My own glory. (Diary 48) I am offering people a
vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces
to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with
the signature “Jesus, I trust in You.” (Diary 327) The
two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands
for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red
ray stands for the Blood, which is the life of souls.
These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My
tender mercy when My agonized heart was opened by
a lance on the Cross. These rays shield souls from the
wrath of My Father. Happy is the one who dwells in
their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold
of him.” (Diary 299)
The Church’s Feast of Divine Mercy which falls on the
Sunday after Easter has been celebrating this feast ever
since the Vatican had made it official on April 30
th
in the
Jubilee year 2000. Those who have left the Church may
want to come back because of the promise that Jesus
Himself made for a complete forgiveness of sins and
punishment on that day, even to the most terrible sinner
imaginable. God in His great mercy is giving mankind a
last chance for salvation. Concerning the Feast of Mercy
Jesus said: “Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on
this day will be granted complete forgiveness and
punishment.” (Diary 300). To receive this great promise
one has to go to Confession and then receive Holy
Communion on the Feast of Divine Mercy. To receive
Communion worthily one should be in the state of grace
and without serious sin.
