Parish Stewardship
Thank you for your generous offerings of October 25/26.
The regular collection brought in $14,196 and the Poor Box
yielded $226. The Poor Box offerings for October will go to
benefit our Sister Parish in Nicaragua.
A Word from the Pastor
When we were baptized we received an indelible mark on
our souls that not only marks us for all eternity as
Christians, but also obligates us to live out our Faith by
everything that we say and do. When we received the
sacrament of Confirmation, both the mark on the soul and
the obligation to testify to our Faith by our lives is
deepened.
This obligation to testify to our Faith by our very lives will
be put to the test on election day. As Catholics we have a
solemn and overriding duty to defend all innocent Human
Life from the very instant of conception. This needs to
inform how and for whom we vote.
The sanctity of all innocent Human Life – born or in the
womb – is the Fundamental Right from which all other
rights derive – it is the Foundation Right. Healthcare,
education, the war on poverty, the economy all take a back
seat to the Right to Life.
As Catholics it is incumbent upon us to support that
candidate who will best protect and extend that
fundamental right because only once the Right to Life is
assured can we properly begin to attend to the other rights.
Vote as if your Soul depended on it, the Soul of our
nation certainly does…
There is no such thing as a “safe” abortion. All
abortions are unsafe for the unborn child.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

The word icon means in the
Greek language, simply
“image”,
and
the
characteristic of an image is
that it is the expression of
an essence.
The holy
images that adorn the churches of the east wish to
express, or reveal the divine essence of God. Come learn
more about the meaning of icons while engaging in the
prayerful act of creating your own!
Ioanna Belcea studied iconography under the Russian
master iconographer Vladislav Andreyev of the Prosopon
School of Iconology. The method of transmitting this
ancient tradition blends theological discourse and practical
information, while the step-by-step approach allows even
the student unfamiliar with the painting brush to delight in
the luminous result: a completed icon painted in the
Byzantine egg tempera and 24K gold leaf on wooden board
technique. It takes approximately 40 hours to complete an
icon, so attendance on all scheduled dates is highly
encouraged. The fee for the course is $450 and includes
tuition and materials. Only ten students are accepted per
class. If you are interested in setting up a workshop in your
area, or for more information regarding this listed
workshop, please contact us at ioana@ikonworkshop.com
or call 703.624.9478.

Vocations Awareness
Some white-collar jobs are more challenging than others
Vocation Prayer:
Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to
those You have called the willingness and generosity of
spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and
their talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and
particularly the faith of those You have called and will
continue to call. We ask this glorious truth to others as
a priest, deacon or in the consecrated life?

Diocese of Arlington - Respect Life Office
Proposed Bill Could Thwart Hundreds of Pro-Life Laws
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life
Secretariat has urged clear, vigilant, and persistent
advocacy against an extremely dangerous bill being
considered by Congress called the “Freedom of Choice
Act” (or FOCA). The Pro-Life Secretariat has expressed
grave concern to state Catholic conferences that FOCA
would, if enacted and signed into law, sweep away
hundreds of pro-life laws and policies at the state and
federal levels! You are highly encouraged to respond to
the USCCB approved alert in the following link, and to
forward it to as many other people as possible who may
share your concerns:

should be aware of the following policies of the Diocese of
Arlington with regard to political activity at parishes and

Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions
For November 2008
General:
That the testimony of love offered by the Saints, may
fortify Christians in their service to God and neighbour,
imitating Christ who came not to be served but to serve.
Mission:
That Christian communities in Asia, contemplating the
face of Christ, may find the most suitable way to
announce Him in full fidelity to the Gospel to the peoples
of that vast continent so rich in culture and ancient forms
of spirituality.
The Commemoration of All the Faithful
Departed (All Souls)
The souls of the just are in God’s hands. Christ, the
Good Shepherd died for us while we were still sinners.
He is the resurrection and the life. If we have died with
him, we shall also live with him.
Rooted in ancient Christian tradition (2
nd
c. and
Tertullian), St. Odilo of Cluny established a memorial of
all the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome
in the 13
th
century.
Eternal rest grant unto all of these O Lord; and let the
perpetual light of Thine countenance shine upon them
soon.
Amen.
May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs
receive you and lead you into the holy city of Jerusalem.
May the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus,
who once was poor, may you enjoy eternal rest.
Amen.
