A Word from the Pastor
There is a legend about Robert the Bruce who having
been defeated numerous times by the English, in despair
sought refuge in a cave, and there considered giving it all
up. However, in the twilight of the cave his attention was
caught by a small spider trying to spin a web. Time after
time the spider fell in its attempt. Six times it cast its silky
strand and six times it fell. The Bruce told the spider that
he might as well give up, but the spider persevered, and
the seventh time its strand held and it built its web. The
King took that as a sign and returned to the field of battle,
driving the English back and achieving independence for
Scotland (until the lamentable Act of Union in 1707)..
In the wake of the election of our nations most rabidly,
pro-abortion candidate for president, anti-abortion forces
may feel like Robert the Bruce as he entered the cave.
The Washington Post (which all too frequently does not
“get it”) had a front page story entitled “Some Abortion
Foes Shifting Focus from Ban to Reduction.” That sounds
suspiciously like the Clinton mantra to make abortion legal,
safe and rare. (Nobody bothered to ask why should it be
rare, if there was nothing wrong with it). The President -
elect does not even throw that scrap to abortion opponents,
but rather makes his support of The Freedom of Choice Act
a cornerstone of his domestic policy, and even envisioned
the abortion of his own grandchildren, if his daughters
make the mistake of getting pregnant.
A democracy gets the leaders it deserves. Those who
truly opposed abortion need to work to change the status
quo rather than to accommodate and accept it. No matter
what other benefits a regime may offer its people, if it does
not protect the weakest and most vulnerable members of
society, it is morally unacceptable. With an eye to making
the moral law the law of the land, we must work to change
perception in our society so that we will deserve better
leadership that will protect the most vulnerable.
We need to start with language. Jettison the terms “pro-
choice” and “pro-life.” State the issue plainly; you are
either for abortion or against abortion. Recognize the
science involved, that is that the unborn child is a Human
Life (no woman ever gave birth to a puppy), and as such
deserves all the rights and protections inherently due to
innocent Human Life. As we begin the new liturgical year
we need to recommit ourselves to the eradication of the
hitherto unspeakable evil of abortion, not to accept it.
Like King Robert the Bruce let us learn from the
determined and intrepid spider to try and try and never stop
trying until we succeed.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Vocations Awareness
Some white-collar jobs are more challenging than others
Vocation Prayer:
Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to
those You have called the willingness and generosity of
spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their
talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly
the faith of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen.
Almighty God,
Remove the scourge of abortion from the face of the Earth.
Amen.

Advent
(from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming")
Advent season is the period
of penchant waiting and
preparation for the
celebration of the Nativity of
Jesus, in other words, the
period immediately before
Christmas, commencing on
Advent Sunday,
A darker purple (sometimes
called "Royal Purple") is
used whereas in Lent the
color is often a reddish
purple ("Roman Purple").
This shade is used on the
vestments of the clergy, and sometimes on the
Tabernacle. On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, Gaudete
Sunday, rose- pink is used, since this Sunday takes on a
more joyous tone.
From the 4th century, the season was kept as a period of
fasting as strict as that of Lent. The fast became known
as "St. Martin's Fast, “St. Martin's Lent" or “The forty
days of St. Martin”). The feast day was in many countries
a time of frolic and heavy eating, since the 40-day fast
began the next day. This fasting rule was later relaxed,
but still keeping Advent as a season of penitence.
ADVENT
The Advent wind begins to stir
With sea-like sounds in our Scotch fir,
It’s dark at breakfast, dark at tea,
And in between we only see
Clouds hurrying across the sky
And rain-wet roads the wind blows dry
And branches bending to the gale
Against great skies all silver-pale.
The world seems traveling into space,
And traveling at a faster pace
Than in the leisured summer weather
When we and it sit out together,
For now we feel the world spin ‘round
On some momentous journey bound –
Journey to what? to whom? to where?
The Advent bells call out ‘Prepare,
Your world is journeying to the birth
Of God made Man for us on earth.’
And how, in fact, do we prepare
For the great day that waits us there –
The twenty-fifth day of December,
The birth of Christ?
For some it means
An interchange of hunting scenes
On coloured cards. And I remember
Last year I sent out twenty yards,
Laid end to end, of Christmas cards
To people that I scarcely know,
They’d sent a card to me, and so -
The only cards that really count
Are that extremely small amount
From real friends who keep in touch
And are not rich but love us much.
The time draws near the birth of Christ,
A present that cannot be priced
Given two thousand years ago.
Yet if God had not given so
He still would be a distant stranger
And not the Baby in the manger
.
