St. Luke – October 18
th
Born to pagan Greek parents, St. Luke was one of the
earliest converts to Christianity. He was a physician,
studying in Antioch and Tarsus. He probably traveled as a
ship's doctor; many charitable societies of physicians are
named for him. Legend has it that he was also a painter
who may have done portraits of Jesus and Mary, but none
have ever been correctly or definitively attributed to him.
This story, and the inspiration his Gospel has always given
artists, led to his patronage of them. He met Saint Paul at
Troas, and evangelized Greece and Rome with him, being
there for the shipwreck and other perils of the voyage to
Rome, and stayed in Rome for Paul's two years in prison.
He wrote The Gospel According to Luke, much of which
was based on the teachings and writings of Paul,
interviews with early Christians, which would include the
Virgin Mary, and his own experiences. He wrote a history of
the early Church in the Acts of the Apostles.
Born at Antioch
Died c. 74 in Greece. Some stories say he was martyred,
others that he died of natural causes.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

40 Days For Life
September 24
th
through November 2nd
Christians throughout Northern Virginia are invited to take
part in the national 40 Days for Life effort. 40 Days for Life
is a nation-wide campaign that calls upon God through
prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in
America. This is a remarkable effort that has grown
dramatically over the last years. The St. Catherine of
Siena Pro-Life Committee is participating in the effort and
asks fellow parishioners to join us. From September 24
th
through November 2
nd
, we ask that parishioners devote
special prayer and periods of fasting to the unborn and ask
God to help America free itself from the evil of abortion. St.
Catherine’s will also joined other area parishes and hold a
peaceful vigil outside the abortion clinic located
at
900 S
.
Washington Street in Falls Church. St. Catherine’s prayed
at the clinic for 24 hours on Tuesday, October 7

CCD Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When should I enroll my child
in CCD classes!
A. As soon as possible for as
long as possible: from the first
grade to the twelfth grade. The
CCD classes here at Saint
Catherine’s build on each other.
A common mistake is to enroll
your child for one year prior to a
“sacrament year”. This places a large degree of stress on
the catechist to get your child caught up, if that is possible.
This also teaches your child that his knowledge of the faith
is only important sometimes. Rather, we must learn about
our faith all the time. We even have adult Bible studies
here at Saint Catherine’s for those beyond the twelfth
grade!
Q. At what age or grade is first Holy Communion and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the second grade CCD
class, however you are highly encouraged to start your
child’s preparation by enrolling him in the first grade class.
This allows him to get a head-start with more time to
prepare over two years instead of one year.
Q. At what age or grade is Holy Confirmation and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the eighth grade CCD
class for reception of the sacrament in the autumn of his
ninth grade year. We recommend you enroll your child in
the seventh grade so he has more time to prepare. We
even more highly recommend you enroll your child in the
first grade so he has even more time to prepare!
Q. My child goes to a Catholic high school. Does he have
to enroll in CCD classes if he receives religion classes at
school in order to receive Holy Confirmation!
A. No, your child’s enrollment in Catholic school will count
as a substitute for the CCD class. However, the other
requirements still must be met. He must complete all
reports and attend all retreats. Please fill out a “Catholic
School Student Registration” available from the Office of
Religious Education when your child begins his eighth
grade year.
Q. Why should my child be enrolled in CCD classes after
Holy Confirmation? He has so much homework and other
commitments we just can’t make it.
A. We have a fantastic high school CCD program that
specifically addresses what the teenagers need to learn
most. This year the high school CCD class is studying
moral theology, but first they will study some philosophy to
clear the confusion and help them think clearly, orderly and
logically. Holy Confirmation is not a graduation. It is a
sacrament that strengthens us. What better time to study
then when we are strongest!
CCD Setup Crew
High School Boys!
The Office of Religious Education has a few paid positions
open for after-school work. Responsibilities include moving
and arranging desks, chairs, and whiteboards for the CCD
classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you would like to
earn some spending cash, please contact the Office of
Religious Education.

Page 4
CCD Catechists are Needed!
There are several positions in our CCD
programs still open for catechists and
assistant catechists.
First grade catechist & assistant – Tuesdays 5-6:00 p.m.
Second grade assistant – Tuesdays 5-6:00 p.m.
Third grade assistant – Tuesdays 5-6:00 p.m.
Fifth grade assistant – Monday 6:45 – 7:45 p.m.
If you would like to volunteer to pass on the holy faith to the
next generation, please fill out a Catechist Registration
Form available from the Office of Religious Education. .
We will provide all materials, support, training, and the
assistance of an experienced catechist. Please consider
donating your time. Graces will be amply supplied.
Becoming Catholic
Beginning October 5
th
on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to

those who are more certain. This class will also be useful
for adults who may have skipped a sacrament (e.g. Holy
Confirmation). If you or someone you know is interested,
please contact the Office of Religious Education at
703.759.3530.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Begin preparation with the priest six months prior to the
wedding. A six month parish pre-registration is required
before preparation can begin. Living together before
marriage is sinful and harmful to the future of the marriage.
Couples who are living together will be asked to live
separately during the marriage preparation time.

Some white-collar jobs are more challenging than others
Vocation Prayer:
Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to
those You have called the willingness and generosity of
spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their
talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly
the faith of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen.
