Martyrs of North America; Martyrs of New France
They are:
Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, Gabriel Lalemant, Isaac

Canonized 29 June 1930 by Pope Pius XI
Holy Martyrs and patrons, protect this land which you
have blessed by the shedding of your blood. Renew in
these days our Catholic faith which you helped to
establish in this new land. Bring all our fellow citizens to a
knowledge and love of the truth. Make us zealous in the
profession of our faith so that we may continue and
perfect the work which you have begun with so much
labour and suffering. Pray for our homes, our schools, our
missions, for vocations, for the conversion of sinners, the
return of those who have wandered from the fold, and the
perseverance of all the Faithful. And foster a deeper and
increasing unity among all Christians. Amen.
-Jesuit novena prayer to the martyrs
The Inner Life of Mary
The supernatural life which Mary led on earth, particularly
her advancement in grace and wisdom, in her intimate
union with Jesus, her Divine Son, the Second Person of
the Blessed Trinity. Saint Luke, in chapter 2, tells us
Mary’s manner of meditation, how she pondered on the
words concerning Jesus and the words spoken by Jesus:
“But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her
heart,” and “his mother kept all these words in her heart.”
The feast of the Inner Life of Mary is celebrated by the
Sulpicians, 19 October.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

is a nation-wide campaign that calls upon God through
prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in
America. This is a remarkable effort that has grown
dramatically over the last years. The St. Catherine of
Siena Pro-Life Committee is participating in the effort and
asks fellow parishioners to join us. From September 24
th
through November 2
nd
, we ask that parishioners devote
special prayer and periods of fasting to the unborn and ask
God to help America free itself from the evil of abortion.
Please prayerfully consider supporting this great effort.

Becoming Catholic
Beginning October 5
th
on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to
10:15, the Office of Religious Education will hold classes
for those interested in learning more about “Becoming
Catholic”. These classes are ideal for those who are just
curious about what it means to be Catholic, as well as for
those who are more certain. This class will also be useful
for adults who may have skipped a sacrament (e.g. Holy
Confirmation). If you or someone you know is interested,
please contact the Office of Religious Education at
703.759.3530.
“I Will Build My Church
– The Acts of the Apostles”
The Holy Father, Pope Benedict, has declared this to be
the year of St. Paul. Throughout the year, the Office of
Religious Education will host a series of Bible studies on
the life and writings of St. Paul found in Sacred Scripture.
Our first study for the year will begin with the book The Acts
of the Apostles. Over five Friday mornings from October
3
rd
to October 31
st
we will study the very beginnings of the
holy Catholic Church and in particular the life of St. Paul as
presented in The Acts of the Apostles. Please join our
study in Bishop Justs Hall with a light breakfast on Friday
mornings from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please inform the
Office of Religious Education if you plan on attending so a
proper amount of materials can be ordered.

CCD Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When should I enroll my child in
CCD classes!
A. As soon as possible for as long
as possible: from the first grade to
the twelfth grade. The CCD classes
here at Saint Catherine’s build on
each other. A common mistake is to
enroll your child for one year prior to
a “sacrament year”. This places a large degree of stress
on the catechist to get your child caught up, if that is
possible. This also teaches your child that his knowledge of
the faith is only important sometimes. Rather, we must
learn about our faith all the time. We even have adult Bible
studies here at Saint Catherine’s for those beyond the
twelfth grade!
Q. At what age or grade is first Holy Communion and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the second grade CCD
class, however you are highly encouraged to start your
child’s preparation by enrolling him in the first grade class.
This allows him to get a head-start with more time to
prepare over two years instead of one year.
Q. At what age or grade is Holy Confirmation and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the eighth grade CCD
class for reception of the sacrament in the autumn of his
ninth grade year. We recommend you enroll your child in
the seventh grade so he has more time to prepare. We
even more highly recommend you enroll your child in the
first grade so he has even more time to prepare!
Q. My child goes to a Catholic high school. Does he have
to enroll in CCD classes if he receives religion classes at
school in order to receive Holy Confirmation!
A. No, your child’s enrollment in Catholic school will count
as a substitute for the CCD class. However, the other
requirements still must be met. He must complete all
reports and attend all retreats. Please fill out a “Catholic
School Student Registration” available from the Office of
Religious Education when your child begins his eighth
grade year.
Q. Why should my child be enrolled in CCD classes after
Holy Confirmation? He has so much homework and other
commitments we just can’t make it.
A. We have a fantastic high school CCD program that
specifically addresses what the teenagers need to learn
most. This year the high school CCD class is studying
moral theology, but first they will study some philosophy to
clear the confusion and help them think clearly, orderly and
logically. Holy Confirmation is not a graduation. It is a
sacrament that strengthens us. What better time to study
then when we are strongest!

Please Do Not Park on the Grass
We have spent a great deal of money
repairing the asphalt at the Church as
well as planting new grass in front of the
Church. Parking on the grass not only
damages the grass but the edges of the
asphalt as well. More to the point: it is a
violation of the posted Fire Lanes.
There are plenty of parking spaces for all, but yes, if you
are late you will have to walk a few more feet. Arrive five
minutes early and there will be no extra walking. If you see
someone parking on the grass, please ask them to move;
this is your Church. We do not want to have to resort to
towing the offenders. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Begin preparation with the priest six months prior to the
wedding. A six month parish pre-registration is required
before preparation can begin. Living together before
marriage is sinful and harmful to the future of the marriage.
Couples who are living together will be asked to live
separately during the marriage preparation time.

Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.

Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly
the faith of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen.
