The Feast of All Saints – November 1
st
The feast of All Saints originated in the West in 609, when
Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. At first celebrated in Rome on May 13, Pope
Gregory III (731-41) changed the date to November 1,
when he dedicated a chapel in honor of All Saints in the
Vatican Basilica. Gregory IV later extended the feast to the
whole Church.
Catholic Liturgy of the Hours All Saints Prayer
Father, All-Powerful and ever-living God,
today we rejoice in the holy men and women of every
time and place.
May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for Saintly Grace
Almighty and Everlasting God,
who dost enkindle the flame of Thy love in the hearts of
the saints, grant unto us the same faith and power of
love; that as we rejoice in their triumphs we may profit by
their examples, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

2008 Fall Icon Workshop
Workshop Dates & Times:
November 7, 5-9; November 8, 9-5;
November 21, 5-9; November 22, 9-5;
December 7, 9-5
The word icon means in the Greek
language, simply “image”, and the
characteristic of an image is that it is
the expression of an essence. The
holy images that adorn the churches
of the east wish to express, or reveal
the divine essence of God. Come
learn more about the meaning of icons
while engaging in the prayerful act of
creating your own!
Ioanna Belcea studied iconography under the Russian
master iconographer Vladislav Andreyev of the Prosopon
School of Iconology. The method of transmitting this
ancient tradition blends theological discourse and practical
information, while the step-by-step approach allows even
the student unfamiliar with the painting brush to delight in
the luminous result: a completed icon painted in the
Byzantine egg tempera and 24K gold leaf on wooden board
technique. It takes approximately 40 hours to complete an
icon, so attendance on all scheduled dates is highly
encouraged. The fee for the course is $450 and includes
tuition and materials. Only ten students are accepted per
class. If you are interested in setting up a workshop in your
area, or for more information regarding this listed
workshop, please contact us at ioana@ikonworkshop.com
or call 703.624.9478.

A Warm Welcome to Newcomers
If you are a visitor who regularly attends Mass at St.
Catherine’s, it is very important we know who you are!
Please fill out a simple card at the Parish Office that will
allow us to serve you better. Being on the rolls of St.
Catherine gives you a few benefits. Mainly, the Priests get
to know their flock by name, essential in times of illness or
death and for receiving some of the Sacraments. By using
offertory envelopes with your name on them we can
provide year-end tax information that is unavailable to
those who place checks or cash in the collection. Year-end
proof of donations will be required on the 2007 tax returns.

vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.

Arlington with regard to political activity at parishes and
other Church facilities and events.

ALERT
Proposed Bill Could Thwart Hundreds of Pro-Life Laws
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life
Secretariat has urged clear, vigilant, and persistent
advocacy against an extremely dangerous bill being
considered by Congress called the “Freedom of Choice
Act” (or FOCA). The Pro-Life Secretariat has expressed
grave concern to state Catholic conferences that FOCA
would, if enacted and signed into law, sweep away
hundreds of pro-life laws and policies at the state and
federal levels! You are highly encouraged to respond to
the USCCB approved alert in the following link, and to
forward it to as many other people as possible who may
share your concerns:
http://www.nchla.org/issues.asp?ID=50.
House Bill: H.R. 1964, Senate Bill: S.1173.
Virginia Catholic Conference Advocacy
The Virginia Catholic Conference has created an E-mail
advocacy network, so that those who wish to contact their
state legislators about respect life, social justice, family and
education issues can receive regular alerts on measures
considered during sessions of the Virginia General
Assembly (from mid-January until mid-March) and
throughout the year. Visit www.vacatholic.org for more
information.
