A Word from the Pastor
February 25
th
is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the
Lenten Season. Even before Lent begins we are starting
the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal. This annual appeal is crucial
to the running of our diocese and directly impacts on us all.
There are over one hundred and fifty thousand families
registered in the Diocese of Arlington (just over one
thousand of them are from St. Catherine of Siena Parish).
Tending to these families (as well as the many more who
are not registered) are 250 priests in 68 parishes and 6
missions. Were we a European country this would
probably be paid for by the government which imposes a
“Church Tax.” However we are American and pay for our
own churches without any government support. Many of
my European friends who visit the United States are both
surprised and impressed to learn that our churches were
built and are maintained without any government
assistance. And they rightly draw the conclusion that we
are a people of Faith.
Your generosity in years gone by to the Bishop’s Lenten
Appeal is a vibrant testimony to that Faith. For the past
four years St. Catherine’s has well surpassed the parish
goal for the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal. Our goal this year is
$220,000 which is less than what we pledged last year. In
supporting the BLA we are supporting our seminarians, of
which we have 34 for the diocese. We have been
privileged in the last three summers to have a seminarian
assigned to St. Catherine’s. And this year we actually have
one of our own registered parishioners among that group.
The seminarians are our future priests and so we have a
very real vested interest in supporting them.
There are many other worthy programmes that are
funded by the BLA and in the upcoming weeks I will
address some of them in detail. In the meantime please
carefully read the insert in this week’s bulletin which
outlines many of the BLA’s functions. It is important for us
to realize that we all have a part in the running of the
diocese. In doing so we are living out our Catholic Faith
and assisting the Bishop in his apostolic role.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

2273 Abortion
The inalienable right to life of every innocent human
individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and
its legislation:
The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized
and respected by civil society and the political authority.
These human rights depend neither on single individuals
nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession
made by society and the state; they belong to human
nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the
creative act from which the person took his origin.
Among such fundamental rights one should mention in
this regard every human being’s right to life and physical
integrity from the moment of conception until death.
The moment a positive law deprives a category of human
beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to
accord them, the state is denying the equality of all
before the law. When the state does not place its power
at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in
particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundation of a
state based on law are undermined … As a
consequence of the respect and protection which must
be ensured for the unborn child from the moment of
conception, the law must provide appropriate penal
sanctions for every deliberate violation of the child’s
rights.
