Parish Stewardship

The Poor Box
contributions for January will go to benefit Divine Mercy
Care.
A Word from the Pastor
A full 13% of the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal is allocated to
Catholic Charities. This is the third largest recipient of the
BLA, (Vocations at 20% is the largest and Youth Ministry at
17% is the second largest). Internationally, Catholic
Charities is one of the most respected aid organizations,
and the U.S. Government often distributes assistance to
Third World countries through Catholic Charities as one of
the surest agencies when it comes to getting the aid to
those for whom it is truly intended. However the 13% of
the BLA for Catholic Charities goes to fund, not the
International Division, but our own local diocesan branch of
Catholic Charities. In this case Charity truly does start at
home. There is a special branch designed to meet the
growing needs of immigrant services, Hogar Hispano,
which is particularly geared to assisting immigrants from
Latin America. With its Spanish speaking staff it helps
many newcomers to our country traverse the often
bewildering hurdles of language and culture as well as the
maze of governmental bureaucracy. Hispanic peoples
make up the largest bloc of immigrants to our area and the
Catholic Church is a familiar beacon to them which can
help better integrate them into our society. Historically the
Church has always done this for immigrants from far away
countries. And Hogar Hispano is an important part of the
process.
Catholic Charities also reaches out to the most
disenfranchised among us, literally providing food to the
hungry and shelter to the homeless. Christ House in
Alexandria is able to offer shelter to some and food to
many more. The soup kitchen at Christ House is always
full and the emergency pantry for food assistance is in
constant need of replenishment. Additionally, the Diocese
recently purchased a bloc of apartments in Prince William
County to provide transitional housing for families who
have lost everything and are trying to rebuild their lives.
Catholic Charities also has some very important
programmes to assist with crisis pregnancies and families
seeking to adopt. Vulnerable young mothers are helped,
both to have and to keep their babies, while other children,
whose mothers cannot – for whatever reason – keep them,
are helped to find loving homes with open-hearted families.
Additional services offered by Catholic Charities are
counseling and elder care, service to the disabled and
prison ministry. And when you give to the Bishop’s Lenten
Appeal you become a part of it all. In a time of need it is all
the more important to give generously. Please consider
the good work of Catholic Charities when you decide how
much to donate to the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

St. Valentine
The origin of St. Valentine,
and
how
many
St.
Valentines there were,
remains a mystery. One
opinion is that he was a
Roman
martyred
for
refusing to give up his
Christian
faith.
Other
historians hold that St.
Valentine was a temple
priest jailed for defiance
during the reign of Claudius.
In 496 AD Pope Gelasius
marked February 14th as a
celebration in honor of his
martyrdom.
The first representation of
Saint Valentine appeared in
The Nuremberg Chronicle,
a great illustrated book
printed in 1493. [Additional
evidence that Valentine was
a real person: archaeologists have unearthed a Roman
catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint
Valentine.] Alongside a woodcut portrait of him, text states
that Valentinus was a Roman priest martyred during the
reign of Claudius the Goth [Claudius II]. Since he was
caught marrying Christian couples and aiding any
Christians who were being persecuted under Emperor
Claudius in Rome [when helping them was considered a
crime], Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned. Claudius
took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus made a
strategic error: he tried to convert the Emperor --
whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was
beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't do it, he
was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate [circa 269].
Saints are not supposed to rest in peace; they're expected
to keep busy: to perform miracles, to intercede. Being in jail
or dead is no excuse for non-performance of the
supernatural. One legend says, while awaiting his
execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer's blind
daughter. This miracle inspired the cherished sign of love
and friendship called a “valentine.” Another legend says, on
the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the
jailer's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine.”
May the timeless message of this special day fill your
hearts with God’s love.
