A Word from the Pastor
The time of year has come again when we mark the
saddest of anniversaries with the March for Life. In the 36
years since the Supreme Court’s infamous Roe vs. Wade
decision moral darkness has made steady and increasingly
far-reaching inroads in our society. Abortion which was
once not a topic for polite society is now seen as a right,
albeit thinly disguised, as the “right to choose.” Of course,
the particular choice – the death of an innocent unborn
child – is left unsaid. Apparently if we do not use ugly
words we can avoid ugliness. But no amount of pretty and
fine-sounding words can conceal just how ugly abortion is –
and how evil.
In the decades since Roe vs. Wade the fight against
abortion has been a rocky one. Although the decision itself
has not been overturned some few brakes have been put
on abortion on demand. However the small advances we
have made in limiting abortions may all be undone if
Congress passes the so-called Freedom of Choice Act
(FOCA). Among other things FOCA will force American
taxpayers to fund abortions and individual States will be
deprived of their ability to regulate abortions, for example,
to outlaw the notorious partial birth abortion procedure.
Catholic hospitals, doctors and nurses would be forced to
offer abortions even though the procedure incurs an
automatic excommunication on any Catholic participating in
the procuring of an abortion.
FOCA by its very nature respects neither God nor Man: it
is an obscene misuse of words to open the Gates of Hell
wide to our society and force people to enter.
Next weekend we will have tables set up in the narthex
for parishioners to sign postcards to both our Virginia
Senators and to Representative Wolf opposing FOCA. The
signed postcards will then be taken to the Diocesan
Chancery and Bishop Loverde will deliver them in person.
This postcard campaign is sponsored by the Catholic
Bishops and I strongly encourage everyone to participate.
In addition I encourage each and every one of you to write
to our Members of Congress expressing politely, but
strongly absolute opposition to FOCA. As Edmund Burke
is alleged to have said, “It is necessary only for the good
man to do nothing for evil to triumph.”
Please do not allow evil to triumph – act now in
opposition to this latest attack on Human Life at its most
vulnerable point.
Please note:
The Parish Offices will be closed on January 19

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

2009 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Begins
Be Rich In Good Works…Ready To Share
Many of you have received Bishop Loverde’s letter
requesting your financial support to the 2009 Bishop’s
Lenten Appeal (BLA). Please consider making a
generous pledge to this important annual campaign. The
BLA funds help to support diocesan offices and
ministries that serve tens of thousands of people each
year. All parishes benefit from services that are received
from the Diocese of Arlington. From support of
seminarians, to the training of our catechists, to helping
our youth grow in their faith, to teaching respect for the
sanctity of life, the BLA funds those things that parishes
cannot do on their own. Despite these challenging
economic times, please reflect on your blessings and
consider sharing a portion of your gifts to help your
brothers and sisters in our diocese who are served by
our ministries, programs and services. Please consider
making a sacrificial pledge in gratitude for the gifts that
God has given to you.
That each of us will joyously share a portion of our gifts
for the work of our Diocese through the Bishop’s Lenten
Appeal. We pray to the Lord.

Apostolic Constitution Fidel Depositum
On the publication of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church prepared
following the Second Vatican
Ecumenical Council
2270 Abortion
Human life must be respected and protected absolutely
from the moment of conception. From the first moment of
his existence, a human being must be recognized as
having the rights of a person – among which is the
inviolable right of every innocent being to life.
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before
you were born I consecrated you.
My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being
made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the
earth
2271
Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral
evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not
changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that
is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is
gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not
cause the newborn to perish.
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble
mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a
manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with
the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion
and infanticide are abominable crimes.
2272 – 1463
The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of
mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime
committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who
is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of
society.
Mary, our Mother in Heaven, pray for us,
and especially for your little ones in danger of abortion.
