Parish Stewardship
Thank you for your generous offerings of May 9/10. The
regular collection brought in $14,849 and the Poor Box
yielded $394.
A Word from the Pastor
The parish of St. Catherine of Siena has long been
known for the beauty of its music programme which adds
so much to the liturgy. During the past few years, the
programme has undergone some changes and has scaled
back in scope while never sacrificing the first-rate quality of
the music.
Five years ago, we had a paid choir of thirty-four
members, and on occasion had small orchestras to
accompany them. We had a children’s choir, which
although it practiced weekly, rarely sang at Mass. Since
then we have changed Music Directors twice, and have
pared down the professional choir to twelve while having
the children’s choir sing regularly. While the music has
changed somewhat, the quality of the music has not
suffered.
Much of this is due to the dedication and hard work of our
Director of Music, Dr. Kimberly Hess, who is currently
assisted by Dr. Leo Nestor. At the Latin Mass, rather than
have an entrance hymn, we have the Choir chant the
Introit, while the Mass concludes with a Marian hymn,
generally the Salve Regina or as in the Easter Season the
Regina Coeli. The children’s choir has become a regular
feature at the 8:45 a.m. Mass, which has enhanced the
beauty of that Mass, while increasing the participation of
our younger parishioners.
During the past few years, we have managed to do two
seemingly contradictory things: we have reduced
expenditure while improving what was already a high
standard of quality. However, with the economic downturn
St. Catherine’s, like everyone else, has cut back in
expenditure. In order to maintain the high quality of our
music programme, we are holding a special performance at
3 p.m. on Pentecost Sunday to raise funds. Our aim is to
raise $30,000.00; the pledges we have received so far are
roughly a third of that. Tickets are being sold for the
concert at $25 for adults and $10 for youth. The
professional choir itself is performing without pay. The
Blessed Sacrament will be removed and the Altar screened
off for the performance. I strongly encourage everyone to
buy a ticket and to invite friends and family who are not
parishioners to come as well. It will prove to be a beautiful
afternoon and an exceptional way to celebrate Pentecost,
while ensuring the beauty and quality of our music
programme in the upcoming year.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Electronic Offertory Giving with Faith Direct
This month we are introducing a new and exciting way for
you to support our parish offertory: Faith Direct. Faith
Direct enables your family to make your parish
contributions through either direct debit to your checking
account or through your Visa, Master Card, American
Express or Discover credit cards. No more writing checks
or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now
you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish
offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to
make your mortgage, car, or tuition payments. With Faith
Direct, St. Catherine will gain predictable cash flow that will
help us with planning our parish needs and programs.
Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to
replace your envelopes for the collection basket. Of course
enrollment is voluntary, but many parishes and their
members around the country have experienced a win-win
partnership with Faith Direct. If you find this program to be
appropriate for your family, please enroll by responding to
the mailings you will receive or visit www.faithdirect.net to
enroll securely on-line. Our parish code is VA129.
God bless you, Fr. Drummond
Call to Holy Orders
Seminarian, Mick Kelly received the
call to Holy Orders from Bishop
Loverde who will ordain Mick a
transitional Deacon at St. Thomas
Moore Cathedral on Saturday, the
sixth of June. Mick was assigned to
St. Catherine’s for the summer of
2006 and has since spent his
Christmas and Easter’s here with us, assisting in all the
special, and often complicated holiday Masses. It is a
great honour for me personally, and for our entire Parish
that the newly ordained Deacon, Mick Kelly will serve at our
Vigil Mass on the sixth of June – his dealconal ordination
day and will also preach for the very first time!
St. Catherine’s will host a reception for Mick immediately
following the Vigil Mass in Bishop Justs Hall. Everyone is
invited!
Food Drive for Christ House Continues
Christ House in Alexandria is in urgent need of food items
for families in our diocese who are suffering during this
economic downturn. St. Catherine’s will be collecting food
items to help alleviate this need. Marked collection bins
will be placed in the narthex of the Church. Please be
generous.
The following items are urgently needed:
boxed instant potatoes, boxed rice, canned fruit
But the following items are in constant need of re-supply:
canned tuna, jars of spaghetti sauce, dried pasta, as well
as canned pasta, canned vegetables, cereal, peanut butter,
jellies/jams, bags/boxes of cookies, complete pancake mix,
syrup, sugar, ice tea mix, bottled water, liquid laundry soap,
sandwich bags. Thank you for providing for those less
fortunate, and may God bless this effort.

A Warm Welcome to Newcomers
If you are a visitor who regularly attends Mass at St.
Catherine’s, it is very important we know who you are!
Please fill out a simple card at the Parish Office that will
allow us to serve you better. Being on the rolls of St.
Catherine gives you a few benefits. Mainly, the Priests get
to know their flock by name, essential in times of illness or
death and for receiving some of the Sacraments. By using
offertory envelopes with your name on them we can
provide year-end tax information that is unavailable to
those who place checks or cash in the collection. Year-end
proof of donations will be required on tax returns.
Parishioner Information Request
All registered parishioners should check with the parish

Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist
parents in the role as primary educators of their children

Montessori in regard to the unique spiritual and
developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.

Thank You to All Who Supported the Car Raffle
Thanks to you, Siena Academy raised approximately
$8,000 for Siena Academy to defer tuition costs for parish
children. (We’ll know the exact amount when the final
check comes from All Saints Catholic Church). The raffle
has become an annual event and we appreciate all who
participated and/or sent donations. The 2009 winners are
posted on the Siena Academy bulletin board or may be
found at www.allsaintsvachurch.org.
Thank You for Supporting “Sagra del Siena”
Thanks to your support, “Sagra del Siena” was a HUGE
success! All children, parents and staff extend their sincere
gratitude. It is through this annual event that Siena
Academy is able to subsidize its operational costs and
remain financially independent from the parish. Final
results will be published next week. Thank you again!!!
eScrip Recycling Program
Through the eScrip (Electronic Scrip Incorporated)
Fundraising Program, Siena Academy hopes to raise
money while recycling your old electronics. We are
collecting old ipods, cell phones, ink-jet and toner
cartridges, and laptops. Laptops must have enough charge
to power-up, the power cord must be included, and the
hard drive must be removed. If you wish to recycle and at
the same time help your parish school, please contact
Betsye Richardson at betsyer@verizon.net or place your
item(s) in the eScrip collection box at the top of the school
stairwell. This project is a win-win for all! Thank you for
your support.
Please Do Not Park on the Grass
We have spent a great deal of money
repairing the asphalt at the Church as
well as planting new grass. Parking on
the grass not only damages the grass
but the edges of the asphalt as well.
More to the point: it is a violation of the
posted Fire Lanes. There are plenty of
parking spaces for all, but yes, if you are late you will have
to walk a few more feet. Arrive five minutes early and there
will be no extra walking. If you see someone parking on
the grass, please ask them to move; this is your Church.
We do not want to have to resort to towing the offenders.
Thank you for your cooperation.

The Vitae Foundation
We are dedicated to restoring value to human life. The
Vitae Foundation is engaged in the most comprehensive

powerful resources in the abortion debate. Recently the
Vitae Foundation has launched an advertising Metro bus
campaign in the Washington D.C. area. 4,400 posters
were put on 200 Metro buses at the end of March. Calls
are still coming into the three crisis pregnancy centers in
the Washington Metropolitan region which were advertised.
Vitae is able to track results from the campaign. As with
all advertising, it can be expensive. If you find it in your
heart to contribute to this organization, please contact
