Daily Rosary
The Rosary, a “summary of the
Gospel”, is a wonderful way to have
daily contact with Mary, the Mother of
the Lord. Visit www.theholyrosary.org
to learn how to pray the Holy Rosary.
Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
October 7
The Feast of the Holy Rosary was established by Saint
Pius V on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the
Christian fleet at Lepanto, October 7, 1571. The victory
was attributed to the help of the holy Mother of God
whose aid was invoked through praying the Rosary.
The celebration of this day invites all to mediate upon
the mysteries of Christ, following the example of the
Blessed Virgin Mary who was so singularly associated
with the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of
the Son of God.
From the Christian Prayer(Liturgy of the Hours)
Pope John Paul II asks us to pray the Rosary
(October 16, 2002), Pope John Paul II issued Rosarium
Virginis Mariae - Apostolic Letter on Rosary of the Virgin
Mary.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
1. We are already on the threshold of the month of
October, which, with the liturgical memorial of Our Lady
of the Rosary, inspires us to rediscover this traditional
prayer, so simple yet so profound.
The Rosary is a way of contemplating the face of
Christ, seeing him - we may say - with the eyes of Mary.
For this reason, it is a prayer, that drawing upon the core
of the Gospel, is in full accord with the inspiration of the
Second Vatican Council and very much in keeping with
the direction I gave in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio
ineunte: the Church has to launch out "into the deep" in
the new millennium beginning with the contemplation of
the face of Christ.
Therefore, I wish to suggest the recitation of the
Rosary to individuals, families and Christian
communities. .
2. I wish, once again, to entrust the great cause of
peace to the praying of the Rosary. We are facing an
international situation that is full of tensions, at times
threatening to explode. In some parts of the world, where
the confrontation is harsher - I think particularly of the
suffering land of Christ - we can realize that, even though
they are necessary, political efforts are worth little if one
remains exacerbated in his mind and no one cares to
demonstrate a new disposition of heart in the hope of
reviving the struggle and effort of dialogue.
Who but God alone can infuse such sentiments? It is
more necessary than ever that from every part of the
earth prayer for peace be made to Him. In this
perspective, the Rosary turns out to be the form of prayer
most needed. It builds peace because, while it appeals to
the grace of God, it sows in the one praying it the seed of
good from which we can expect the fruit of justice and
solidarity for personal and community life.
I am thinking of nations and also of families. How much
peace would flow into family relationships if the family
would begin again to pray the Rosary.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.

CCD Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When should I enroll my child in CCD classes?
A. As soon as possible for as long as possible: from the
first grade to the twelfth grade. The CCD classes here at
Saint Catherine’s build on each other. A common mistake
is to enroll your child for one year prior to a “sacrament
year.” This places a large degree of stress on the catechist
to get your child caught up, if that is possible. This also
teaches your child that his knowledge of the faith is only
important sometimes. Rather, we must learn about our
faith all the time. We even have adult Bible studies here at
Saint Catherine’s for those beyond the twelfth grade!
Q. At what age or grade is first Holy Communion and
when should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the second grade CCD
class, however you are highly encouraged to start your
child’s preparation by enrolling him in the first grade class.
This allows him to get a head-start with more time to
prepare over two years instead of one year.
Q. At what age or grade is Holy Confirmation and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the eighth grade CCD
class for reception of the sacrament in the autumn of his
ninth grade year. We recommend you enroll your child in
the seventh grade so he has more time to prepare. We
even more highly recommend you enroll your child in the
first grade so that he has even more time to prepare!
Q. My child goes to a Catholic high school. Does he have
to enroll in CCD classes if he receives religion classes at
school in order to receive Holy Confirmation?
A. No. Your child’s enrollment in a Catholic school will
count as a substitute for the CCD class. However, the
other requirements still must be met. He must complete all
reports and attend all retreats. Please fill out a “Catholic
School Student Registration” available from the Office of
Religious Education when your child begins his eighth
grade year.
Q. Why should my child be enrolled in CCD classes after
Holy Confirmation? He has so much homework and other
commitments, we just can’t make it.
A. We have a fantastic high school CCD program that
specifically addresses what the teenagers need to learn
most. This year the high school CCD class is studying
basic theology and sacred scripture, but first they will study
some philosophy to clear the confusion and help them think
clearly, orderly, and logically. Holy Confirmation is not a
graduation is a sacrament that strengthens us. What
better time to study then when we are strongest?

Quotes of St. John Vianney
Patron Saint of all the world’s
priests
“The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus”
All the good works in the world are not equal to the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass because they are the works of
men; but the Mass is the work of God.
Martyrdom is nothing in comparison for it is but the
sacrifice of man to God; but the Mass is the sacrifice of
God for man.
When we go before the Blessed Sacrament let us open
our heart, our good God will open His.
We shall go to Him; He will come to us, the one to ask,
the other to receive.

the love of God and the love of the poorest among
us. The production will be staged at Pope John
