St. Catherine of Siena
Our saint, who was not a nun, but a laywoman,
lived in the fourteenth century during the
Crusades and the Great Schism
.
St. Catherine of Siena is The Seraphic Virgin, Mystic of
the Incarnate Word, and Mystic of the Mystical Body of
Christ. She is a Doctor of Unity for the Church because
of her wise and tremendous feat in advising the Pope to
return to Rome.
Her courage, holiness and cooperation with God’s Spirit is
a marvelous prototype hardly matched in Church history.
She was not a nun but certainly belonged and dedicated
to the Dominicans as a papal counselor, in a lay apostolic
role, and a stigmatist. Both the secular and religious
watched and admired her virtue carefully. The Holy Father
eagerly sought her advice, and the Pope listened to her
attentively. Through her efforts the papacy returned to
Rome after almost a century in France.
She was intelligent, cheerful and intensely prayerful.
From her prayer life developed a public apostolate.
Catherine’s spiritual testimony is found in the Dialogue.
She worked tirelessly for the poor, the Church, and for
peace between Florence and the Pope.
No matter your job, profession or way of life, Catherine
will lead you if you seek her support. She is great at
establishing harmony, order and unity in your role and
duties. If you are at odds with anyone, are adverse to
certain people, or reluctant to be around troublemakers,
you definitely want to know Catherine. She is a role model
for charity. Explore reading and meditating with
Catherine who was a great unifier and sought to unite
disparities, differences, diverse opinions and divergent
feelings.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.

Siena Academy News
Mission Statement
Siena Academy is the parish school at St. Catherine of
Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist
parents in the role as primary educators of their children
by offering specially prepared environments founded
upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria
Montessori in regard to the unique spiritual and
developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.
Open House a Success!
Many thanks to the parishioners who attended the Open
House on September 20
th
in celebration of Siena
Academy’s 5th Anniversary. Comments made included:
“This is far beyond my expectations.”
“What a beautiful place for children to learn.”
That is wonderful that the chairs and shelves are at the
child’s level.” “It’s so peaceful.”
Some parishioners, when visiting the school’s
Elementary Atrium and learning
of the imagery of the vine and the branches, could only
stand there – mouths agape in wonder. The Atrium is a
prepared environment designed to guide the spiritual
development of the child, fully integrating the Catholic
faith into the young child’s life.

St. Catherine of Siena Eucharistic Quotes:
"O eternal Trinity, You are a deep sea in which the more
I seek the more I find, and the more I find, the more I
seek to know You. You fill us insatiably, because the
soul, before the abyss which You are, is always
famished; and hungering for You, O eternal Trinity, it
desires to behold truth in Your light. As the thirsty hart
pants after the fount of living water, so does my soul long
to leave this gloomy body and see You as You are, in
truth.
