Holy Apostle Matthew
Feast Day September 21
Patron Saint of Bankers
St. Matthew, (meaning “Gift of God”) one of the twelve
Apostles, is the author of the first Gospel. This has been
the constant tradition of the Church and is confirmed by the
Gospel itself. He was the son of Alpheus and was called to
be an Apostle while sitting in the tax collectors place at
Capernaum. Before his conversion he was a publican, i.e.,
a tax collector by profession. He is to be identified with the
"Levi" of Mark and Luke.
His apostolic activity was at first restricted to the
communities of Palestine. Nothing definite is known about
his later life. There is a tradition that points to Ethiopia as
his field of labor; other traditions mention Parthia and
Persia. It is uncertain whether he died a natural death or
received the crown of martyrdom.
St. Matthew's Gospel was written to fill a sorely-felt want
for his fellow countrymen, both believers and unbelievers.
For the former, it served as a token of his regard and as an
encouragement in the trials to come, especially the danger
of falling back to Judaism; for the latter, it was designed to
convince them that the Messiah had come in the person of
Jesus Christ, our Lord, in Whom all the promises of the
Messianic Kingdom, embracing all people, had been
fulfilled. His Gospel, then, answered the question put by the
disciples of St. John the Baptist, "Are you He Who is to
come, or shall we look for another?"
Writing for his countrymen, St. Matthew composed his
Gospel in his native Aramaic, the "Hebrew tongue"
mentioned in the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.
Soon afterward, about the time of the persecution of Herod
Agrippa I in 42 AD, he took his departure for other lands.
Another tradition places the composition of his Gospel
either between the time of this departure and the Council of
Jerusalem, i.e., between 42 AD and 50 AD or even later.
Definitely, however, the Gospel, depicting the Holy City
with its altar and temple as still existing, and without any
reference to the fulfillment of our Lord's prophecy, shows
that it was written before the destruction of the city by the
Romans in 70 AD, and this internal evidence confirms the
early traditions.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.

CCD Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When should I enroll my child in CCD classes?
A. As soon as possible for as long as possible: from the
first grade to the twelfth grade. The CCD classes here at
Saint Catherine’s build on each other. A common mistake
is to enroll your child for one year prior to a “sacrament
year.” This places a large degree of stress on the catechist
to get your child caught up, if that is possible. This also
teaches your child that his knowledge of the faith is only
important sometimes. Rather, we must learn about our
faith all the time. We even have adult Bible studies here at
Saint Catherine’s for those beyond the twelfth grade!
Q. At what age or grade is first Holy Communion and
when should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the second grade CCD
class, however you are highly encouraged to start your
child’s preparation by enrolling him in the first grade class.
This allows him to get a head-start with more time to
prepare over two years instead of one year.
Q. At what age or grade is Holy Confirmation and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the eighth grade CCD
class for reception of the sacrament in the autumn of his
ninth grade year. We recommend you enroll your child in
the seventh grade so he has more time to prepare. We
even more highly recommend you enroll your child in the
first grade so that he has even more time to prepare!
Q. My child goes to a Catholic high school. Does he have
to enroll in CCD classes if he receives religion classes at
school in order to receive Holy Confirmation?
A. No. Your child’s enrollment in a Catholic school will
count as a substitute for the CCD class. However, the
other requirements still must be met. He must complete all
reports and attend all retreats. Please fill out a “Catholic
School Student Registration” available from the Office of
Religious Education when your child begins his eighth
grade year.
Q. Why should my child be enrolled in CCD classes after
Holy Confirmation? He has so much homework and other
commitments, we just can’t make it.
A. We have a fantastic high school CCD program that
specifically addresses what the teenagers need to learn
most. This year the high school CCD class is studying
basic theology and sacred scripture, but first they will study
some philosophy to clear the confusion and help them think
clearly, orderly, and logically. Holy Confirmation is not a
graduation is a sacrament that strengthens us. What
better time to study then when we are strongest?
