The Holy Mass on First Fridays
First Friday devotions among Catholics are related to
devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ. First Friday
practices date to the last decades of the 17
th
century,
when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and spoke to
her of His Sacred Heart. Among the promises Our Lord
revealed to St. Margaret Mary, the 12
th
specifically
referenced practices for Fridays:
In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you
that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will
receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine
consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they
will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the
sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in
that last hour.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as given to St. Margaret
by Jesus, began to grow in popularity as soon as the
saintly woman had died, but was officially recognized 75
years later. Though the devotion dictated to Margaret
referred to 9 consecutive first Fridays, it does not need to
end there. Many of the Catholic faithful continue to make
the First Friday devotion beyond the 9 consecutive
months.

The
Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To
make a Holy Hour is to make a decision to spend one
hour with our friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly
present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
oration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and ready
to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the
world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.
Christ House Food Donation Drive
St. Catherine’s is collecting food items
for Christ House. Many recipients are
seniors, the homeless, single parents
and families who are struggling. Christ
House serves all in need throughout
the diocese, including the rural
counties. Thank you for your
generosity.
The following non-perishable food items
are requested:
Canned meats (corned beef, spam, chicken), canned
tuna, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, jelly,
cereal, pasta, instant potatoes, macaroni & cheese kits.
Please be so kind as to limit contributions to these items,
and please check the expiration dates.
Labeled bins will be placed in the narthex of the church.
Gift cards from Giant or Safeway are another option that
you might find more convenient. Please place gift cards in
an envelope marked “Christ House” and place in the
collection basket at Mass or drop off at the Parish Office.

CCD Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When should I enroll my child in CCD classes?
A. As soon as possible for as long as possible: from the
first grade to the twelfth grade. The CCD classes here at
Saint Catherine’s build on each other. A common mistake
is to enroll your child for one year prior to a “sacrament
year.” This places a large degree of stress on the catechist
to get your child caught up, if that is possible. This also
teaches your child that his knowledge of the faith is only
important sometimes. Rather, we must learn about our
faith all the time. We even have adult Bible studies here at
Saint Catherine’s for those beyond the twelfth grade!
Q. At what age or grade is first Holy Communion and
when should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the second grade CCD
class, however you are highly encouraged to start your
child’s preparation by enrolling him in the first grade class.
This allows him to get a head-start with more time to
prepare over two years instead of one year.
Q. At what age or grade is Holy Confirmation and when
should I enroll my child?
A. You must enroll your child in the eighth grade CCD
class for reception of the sacrament in the autumn of his
ninth grade year. We recommend you enroll your child in
the seventh grade so he has more time to prepare. We
even more highly recommend you enroll your child in the
first grade so that he has even more time to prepare!
Q. My child goes to a Catholic high school. Does he have
to enroll in CCD classes if he receives religion classes at
school in order to receive Holy Confirmation?
A. No. Your child’s enrollment in a Catholic school will
count as a substitute for the CCD class. However, the
other requirements still must be met. He must complete all
reports and attend all retreats. Please fill out a “Catholic
School Student Registration” available from the Office of
Religious Education when your child begins his eighth
grade year.
Q. Why should my child be enrolled in CCD classes after
Holy Confirmation? He has so much homework and other
commitments, we just can’t make it.
A. We have a fantastic high school CCD program that
specifically addresses what the teenagers need to learn
most. This year the high school CCD class is studying
basic theology and sacred scripture, but first they will study
some philosophy to clear the confusion and help them think
clearly, orderly, and logically. Holy Confirmation is not a
graduation is a sacrament that strengthens us. What
better time to study then when we are strongest?

The Importance of the Mass
“The Most Perfect Form of Prayer” – Pope Paul VI
For each Mass we hear with devotion, our Lord sends a
saint to comfort us at death (revelation of Christ to St.
Gertrude the Great). Padre Pio, the stigmatic priest, said,
“The world could exist more easily without the sun than
without the Mass.” The Cure’d Ars, St. Jean Vlanney said,
“If we knew the value of the Mass we would die of joy.” A
great doctor of the Church, St. Anselm, declared that a
single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth
more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention
after death. St. Leonard of Port Maurice supports this
statement by saying that one Mass before death may be
more profitable than many after it. “The Holy Mass would
be of greater profit if people had it offered in their lifetime,
rather than having it celebrated for the relief of the souls
after death.” (Pope Benedict XV)
