The Feast of All Saints – November 1
st
The feast of All Saints originated in the West in 609, when
Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. At first celebrated in Rome on May 13, Pope
Gregory III (731-41) changed the date to November 1,
when he dedicated a chapel in honor of All Saints in the
Vatican Basilica. Gregory IV later extended the feast to the
whole Church.
Catholic Liturgy of the Hours All Saints Prayer
Father, All-Powerful and ever-living God,
today we rejoice in the holy men and women of every
time and place.
May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer for Saintly Grace
Almighty and Everlasting God,
who dost enkindle the flame of Thy love in the hearts of
the saints, grant unto us the same faith and power of
love; that as we rejoice in their triumphs we may profit by
their examples, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord.
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and
ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of
the world. May our adoration never cease.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Mission Statement

Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist
parents in the role as primary educators of their children
by offering specially prepared environments founded
upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria
Montessori in regard to the unique spiritual and
developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.
A Letter from Sister Janet
Dear Parishioners,
I was unable to write last week because the Catholic
Diocese of Arlington sponsored a principal's retreat.
Father Tom Ferguson was the retreat master giving three
conferences on the Eucharist. I appreciated not only the
time for prayer, but the time was well spent with the
office staff of the diocese and the principals from the
diocesan Catholic Schools. Although our school is
particularly unique with its Montessori Program and
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd we are highly
respected and our presence is appreciated at Diocesan
sponsored events.
I want to thank the Knights of Columbus for their
generosity in supporting us financially through the sale of
their Christmas Cards. Hopefully many of you will
purchase cards and support the Knights and the
Academy. Thank you. Another good and easy way to
support the parish school is through escript. You can find
information on the Siena Academy Bulletin board on how
to sign up at the Safeway stores and at Harris Teeter.
We are in the process of signing on at the Giant stores.
I most of all count on your prayers and your fidelity to the
teachings of our Catholic faith that makes the school so
special. God bless you!
Sincerely,
Sister Janet

The Feast of All Souls – November 2nd
The Western celebration of All Souls' Day is on 2
November and follows All Saints’, which commemorates
the departed who have attained the beatific vision.
The Roman Catholic celebration is associated with the
doctrine that the souls of the faithful who at death have
not been cleansed from the temporal punishment due to
venial sins and from attachment to mortal sins cannot
immediately attain the beatific vision in Heaven, and that
they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the
sacrifice of the Mass.. In other words, when they died,
they had not yet attained full sanctification and moral
perfection, a requirement for entrance into Heaven. This
sanctification is carried out posthumously in Purgatory.
The custom of setting apart a special day for intercession
for certain of the faithful on 2 November was first
established by St. Odilo
2 Maccabees 12:42-46.
12:42 Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful
deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned
the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they
had seen with their own eyes what had happened
because of the sin of those who had fallen.
12:43 He then took up a collection among all his soldiers,
amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he
sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In
doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way,
inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view;
12:44 for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again,
it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them
in death.
12:45 But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward
that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it
was a holy and pious thought.
12:46 Thus he made atonement for the dead that they
might be freed from this sin.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
