The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up. God highly exalted him and made him
Lord! How unforgettable are his deeds.
Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the
Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in
search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed the
Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over
the Savior's tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the
Holy Sepulcher over the tomb. During the excavation,
workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one
on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed
a dying woman.
The cross immediately became an object of veneration.
At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the
end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness,
the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed
on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered
placed above Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass
through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the
cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then
with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move
on."
To this day the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox
alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the
September anniversary of the basilica's dedication. The
feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh
century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross
from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years
earlier. According to the story, the emperor intended to
carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was
unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb
and became a barefoot pilgrim.

Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons
who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with
their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message” to the
priest that they want a blessing instead of Communion.
This is liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we
live, some people are instructed to present themselves,
arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign
that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have
not yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord.
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and
ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of
the world. May our adoration never cease.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Siena Academy News
Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it
is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.”
Douay-Rheim Catholic Bible – Mark 10:14
Mission Statement
Siena Academy is the parish school at St. Catherine of
Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist
parents in the role as primary educators of their children
by offering specially prepared environments founded
upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria
Montessori in regard to the unique spiritual and
developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.
Dear Parishioners,
How providential it was to begin school on September
8th, the Birthday of Mary. What a blessing to receive the
children on such a festive day honoring Our Lady. We
trust you will join us in petition and in thanksgiving for
blessings we have/will receive throughout this school
year.
Hopefully you have noticed the ground's improvements
around the school. I am most grateful for the generous
contributions from the past fundraisers that have made
the changes possible. We also were able to replace a
sink cabinet and add a child size sink in a Children's
House environment, and a carpet was laid for the
Elementary Atrium which will greatly enhance the level of
quiet/silence needed for an atmosphere of prayer and
reverence. We will keep you informed of other
improvements as they happen in order to acknowledge
your generosity and my deep gratitude for your support.
Next week I will be able to list details of the number of
students, their ages, and more about our dedicated staff
here at Siena. May you each experience the love and
care that Mary bestows on us as our Mother.
God bless you.

Respecting the Dignity of Life
How do we change our present culture to respect the
dignity of all human life, beginning at conception? One
way is through targeted media advertising. The Vitae
Foundation has been running woman-focused, non-
judgmental, pro-life ad campaigns in major media
markets across this country for over a decade.
Vitae’s innovative advertising strategy is based on in
depth research of “pro-choice” women and from
information gathered from pregnancy center directors
who counsel abortion–minded women. To view Vitae’s
television ads go to www.adsforlife.org. The tremendous
results Vitae has produced in cities like Washington, New
York, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Kansas and Los
Angeles can be repeated if funding for the organization
grows. Would you consider being part of Vitae’s noble
mission by attending the upcoming benefit dinner? It will
be on October 7
th
at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in
Washington, D.C. Dr. John Bruchalski of Divine Mercy
Care will be the guest speaker and Governor Bob
McDonnell has been invited to attend. Seat reservations
are $150 and tables of ten are $1,500. For more
information about the Vitae Foundation or the annual
dinner please contact George or Rebecca Davis at 703-

for your consideration.

Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi)
Marriage Help – Retrouvaille (pronounced
retro-vi) has helped tens of thousands of
couples at all stages of disillusionment or
misery in their marriage. Retrouvaille of
Northern Virginia is a recognized Arlington
Diocese Family Life program to help
couples whose marriages have become
strained, unloving, or perhaps seemingly irreconcilable.
Our Retrouvaille events are put together by volunteers
who have themselves gone through the program and
have made this part of Our Lord’s ministry. Retrouvaille
is often the last hope for couples on the verge of
divorce. The program, coupled with our Father’s loving
grace, has saved countless marriages. Many couples
may unnecessarily suffer because they are unaware that
help is available. Retrouvaille has a very good success
rate in rescuing trouble marriages. This program can
help you too. For confidential information about or to

O God, in whose Passion,
According to the prophecy of Simeon,

Grant that we, who celebrate
The memory of her Seven Sorrows,
May obtain the happy effect of Thy Passion,
Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.
