The Blessed Sacrament

THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD

Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour

A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the

Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to

recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them

on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord.

The Church and the world have a great need of

Eucharistic worship.

Jesus waits for us in this

sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in

going to meet Him in adoration and in contemplation that

is full of faith, and ready to make reparation for the great

faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never

cease.

24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00

a.m. Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of

the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.

24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the

9:00 a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and

ends with reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55

a.m. on Saturday.

Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Communion and Blessings

A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens

during the reception of Holy Communion when persons

who cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up

with their arms crossed over their chest, as a “message”

to the priest that they want a blessing instead of

Communion. This is liturgically incorrect on a number of

levels. First and foremost, the time for Communion is

the time for Communion. The Communion line is not,

and should not be, the blessing line. Secondly, the

liturgical actions of the priest during Mass are highly

regulated, and quite specific of what to do and when to

do it. The actions of a good liturgist may seem

spontaneous, but they are not and should not be.

Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we

live, some people are instructed to present themselves,

arms crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a

blessing. To make things even more confused, some

people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign

that they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who

have not yet made their first Communion may come up

with their parents who are receiving, but should not

present themselves individually for a blessing. Others,

who cannot receive, for whatever reason, should remain

seated. The proper time for the blessing follows the

prayer after Communion, which blessing all receive

together.

Vivas, Pastor of the Basilica of the Immaculate

Conception in El Viejo, Chinandega, Nicaragua, wish to

thank Father Drummond and the parishioners of St.

Catherine of Siena for the donation of $1,100 from the

Poor Box. The donation is being used to support the

children’s feeding center and the parish clinic, which

serves the needy of the community. Monsignor Urbina

expresses his affection and gratitude for Father

Drummond and St. Catherine’s for these works of

mercy.

Christ House Ministry

Christ House in Alexandria continues to need donations

of non-perishable food to support the work of Catholic

Charities. Please limit donations to canned items,

peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, etc. Be sure to check

the expiration date! Items may be placed in the labeled

bins in the Narthex of the Church. Gift cards from Giant

or Safeway are also an option. Place gift cards in an

envelope marked “Christ House” and drop it in the

collection basket at Sunday Mass. Your parishioner

number (envelope number) should also be noted on

the outside envelope.

Mission Statement

Siena Academy is the parish school at St. Catherine of

Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist

parents in the role as primary educators of their children

by offering specially prepared environments founded

upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria

Montessori with regard to the unique spiritual and

developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.

Sponsor a Siena Academy Student’s Model

United Nations Trip

This spring, 4 Siena Academy students are planning to

attend a Model United Nations simulation in New York.

The students have been working hard to earn money to

pay for the trip through pizza and bake sales, but they

need additional financial support. The trip will cost $500

per student and includes 3 nights in a hotel and UN

registration. The dates of the trip are April 13-16, 2011.

Model UN is the only worldwide program to promote

the interest of young students in international relations

and peace in the world. Children participate in the

lessons of problem solving, conflict resolution, and

communication skills.

Please consider sponsoring a student’s trip or a

portion of it by sending a check made payable to Siena

Academy. Please note Montessori UN on the memo

2011 Bishops Lenten Appeal

In the coming days, many of you will receive a

mailing from Bishop Loverde regarding the 2011

Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). This year’s BLA theme

is “Placing our Gifts at the Service of Others.” Jesus

calls on the collective strength of each of us who form

the Body of Christ in our diocese. We all have a

Christian responsibility to share our blessings with others

in need.

Think about the many blessings in your life, including

the gift of your faith. After reflecting upon the importance

of the works of charity and outreach funded by the 2011

BLA, please give prayerful consideration to making a

sacrificial pledge of support. The BLA requires financial

support from every one of us to be successful. Let us

Workshops on the New Translation of the

Roman Missal

.

On November 27, 2011 Catholics throughout the United

States and other English-speaking countries will begin

praying the Mass with a revised translation of the Roman

Missal. To aid the faithful in preparing for this revised

translation, parishioners are invited to workshops on the

New Missal to be held in various locations throughout

2011. Fr. Paul deLadurantaye, Director of the Office of

Sacred Liturgy and the Office of Catechetics of the

Diocese of Arlington, will be the presenter.

The Office of Victim Assistance

Mass to Pray for Healing of Victims of Sexual Abuse

In 2004 Bishop Loverde began a series of diocesan-

sponsored Masses to pray for healing of

victims/survivors of sexual abuse. The Masses are

followed by a reception. The next Mass will be on

Monday, March 14. It is a bilingual Mass and begins at

7:30 pm at Our Lady, Queen of Peace, Arlington.

Bishop Loverde will preside.

Men’s Conference, Saturday, March 19

The Office for Family Life is hosting its second annual

Men’s Conference at St. Joseph’s Parish in Herndon on

Saturday, March 19 (the feast of St. Joseph). There will

be mass, opportunities for confession, and talks by Art

Bennett, MA, President of Catholic Charities, Diocese of

Arlington; Joseph Campo, Director of the St. Francis

House in Brooklyn, NY and CEO of Grassroots Films;

and Fr. Arne Panula, STD, Director of the Catholic

Information Center in Washington, DC. Breakfast and

lunch will be served. We need parish captains to get the

word out. Any man interested in being a captain should

The Couple-to-Couple League offers NFP classes

throughout Northern Virginia. Classes usually consist of

three 2-1/2-hour sessions spaced one month apart.
