March for Life Bus Transportation

St. Catherine of Siena Church has made arrangements

for bus transportation to and from the March for Life on

Monday, January 24. Buses will leave St. Catherine’s at

11:00 am and depart from the National Mass at 5:00 pm.

The Blessed Sacrament

THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD

Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour

A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;

an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our

mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and

more specifically our Eucharistic Lord.

The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic

worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let

us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in

adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith, and

ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of

the world. May our adoration never cease.

24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.

Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the

Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.

24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00

a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with

reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on

Saturday.

Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Call

Communion and Blessings

A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens

during the reception of Holy Communion when

persons who cannot receive Communion

nevertheless line up with their arms crossed over

their chest, as a “message” to the priest that they

want a blessing instead of Communion. This is

liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and

foremost, the time for Communion is the time for

Communion. The Communion line is not, and should

not be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical

actions of the priest during Mass are highly regulated,

and quite specific of what to do and when to do it.

The actions of a good liturgist may seem

spontaneous, but they are not and should not be.

Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which

we live, some people are instructed to present

themselves, arms crossed, before the priest at

Communion time for a blessing. To make things

even more confused, some people present

themselves with crossed arms as a sign that they

wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have not

yet made their first Communion may come up with

their parents who are receiving, but should not

present themselves individually for a blessing.

Others, who cannot receive, for whatever reason,

should remain seated. The proper time for the

blessing follows the prayer after Communion, which

blessing all receive together.

Concert CDs Available for Sale

CDs of the 2010 St. Catherine choir benefit concert

are available for purchase. Suggested donation is

$25.00. The CDs make wonderful gifts and the

purchase of them will also benefit our music

program.

Arlington Catholic Herald

With a circulation of over 50,000, The Arlington

Catholic Herald continues to be one of the lowest of

any Catholic newspaper; however, the yearly

subscription is increasing to $22/year. If you are

receiving the Herald, and are a subscriber – Thank

You! because the cost of newspapers delivered to

diocese parishioners who are not subscribers is

borne by the parishes. Please keep the cost to the

Parish in mind when you find the designated

envelope in your envelope package. The 2

collection for the Herald is scheduled for February

6. Checks should be made payable to St.

Catherine of Siena. We appreciate your assistance

with alleviating the expense to our Parish.

Christ House Ministry

Help St. Catherine’s support the work of Catholic

Charities. Please check the expiration dates and

limit contributions to: Canned items (corned beef,

spam, chicken, tuna, fruit and vegetables), peanut

butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, instant potatoes, and

macaroni & cheese kits. Labeled bins are placed in

the Narthex of the Church. Gift cards from Giant or

Safeway are another option that you might find

more convenient. Please place gift cards in an

envelope marked “Christ House” and place in the

collection basket at Mass or drop off at the Parish

Office. Please make sure to note your parishioner

envelope number with the gift card.

Great Falls “Meals on Wheels”

St. Catherine of Siena, together with a number of

other Great Falls churches, is participating in a

local “Meals on Wheels” group. Drivers, as well as

other volunteers, are needed to assist with the

From the Nicaraguan Committee:

The Nicaraguan Committee and Sister Paula Hidalgo of

the Nicaraguan Missionary Sisters of the Fiat of Mary

want to thank Father Drummond and the people of St.

Catherine of Siena for the $2,000 donation from the Poor

Box which is supporting the sisters’ work with the orphan

children. The funds were used to build an open rancho

for the recreational activities of the children.

Siena Academy is the parish school at St. Catherine of

Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist

parents in the role as primary educators of their children

by offering specially prepared environments founded

upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria

Montessori with regard to the unique spiritual and

developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.

A Note from Sister Janet

Dear Parishioners,

The Siena Academy Staff and I wish you all the

many blessings of peace, joy and the experiences of

Christ’s profound Love this new year. Although this is

not school related, I want to share some good news as a

result of your consistent prayers, especially adoration

before the Blessed Sacrament, for vocations. Our

community has received two requests for pre-postulancy,

our first phase of formation, from two young women from

this diocese. It is with deep gratitude that we feel the

blessings of new vocations in our Community which

results in needing to begin the process of looking at

expanding our formation house for our novices and

newly professed. I welcome you to view our website at:

fsecommunity.org. I continue to ask for your prayers for

vocations. It is important that we not be afraid to “plant

the seed” in the minds and hearts of our young children,

upholding the need for priests, religious and sacramental

marriage. Our adult witness to the virtues of these

vocations are vital. God, through our prayers and

The Couple-to-Couple League offers NFP classes

Men’s and Women’s Conferences

Men’s Conference, Saturday, March 19

The Office for Family Life is hosting its second annual

Men’s Conference at St. Joseph’s Parish in Herndon on

Saturday, March 19 (the feast of St. Joseph). There will

be mass, opportunities for confession, and talks by Art

Bennett, MA, President of Catholic Charities, Diocese of

Arlington; Joseph Campo, Director of the St. Francis

House in Brooklyn, NY and CEO of Grassroots Films;

and Fr. Arne Panula, STD, Director of the Catholic

Information Center in Washington, DC. Breakfast and

lunch will be served, along with time to meet other

Catholic men from the area. With that in mind, we need

parish captains to get the word out. Any man interested

Women’s Conference, Saturday March 12

The Office for Family Life and the Arlington Diocesan

Council of Catholic Women invite the women of the

diocese to join us for a conversation about the unique

challenges confronting women of faith. Speakers include

Helen Alvare, Associate Professor of Law, George

Mason University School of Law and Consultor to Pope

Benedict XVI’s Pontifical Council for the Laity and

Theresa Notate, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Natural Family

Planning Program, United States Conference of Catholic

Bishops. The conference will take place in Burke Hall at

the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, Arlington from 9:00
