Diocesan “The Light is On for You” program,
making confession available every
Wednesday evening during Lent from 6:30

Wednesday evening Holy Hour will not
occur. We will instead say the entire Rosary
– all 4 mysteries -- and conclude with
Benediction at approximately 8:00. Father
Drummond is soliciting volunteers to lead
the Rosary or portions of it. A sign-up sheet
is posted in the back of the Church.)

Church Regulations for Fasting and
Abstinence:
Abstinence from meat (beast or fowl) is to be observed
by all Catholics fourteen years old and older on Ash
Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. This
regulation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs,
milk products or condiments of any kind, even though
made from animal fat.
Fasting is limiting oneself to one full meal on a given
fast day. Catholics who are eighteen years old, but not
yet fifty-nine, are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday. On fast days, two additional small meals
are permitted if necessary to maintain strength;
however, the two smaller meals together may not equal
one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals on fast
days is not permitted.
Parish Stewardship
The Regular Collection for the weekend of March 12/13
totaled $12,866, the 2
nd
collection $790 and the Poor
Box Collection totaled $531. Thank you for your
generosity.

Communion and Blessings
A very common liturgical abuse of our times happens
during the reception of Holy Communion when persons who
cannot receive Communion nevertheless line up with their
arms crossed over their chest, as a ―message‖ to the priest
that they want a blessing instead of Communion. This is
liturgically incorrect on a number of levels. First and
foremost, the time for Communion is the time for
Communion. The Communion line is not, and should not
be, the blessing line. Secondly, the liturgical actions of the
priest during Mass are highly regulated, and quite specific
of what to do and when to do it. The actions of a good
liturgist may seem spontaneous, but they are not and
should not be.
Unfortunately, owing to the confused time in which we live,
some people are instructed to present themselves, arms
crossed, before the priest at Communion time for a
blessing. To make things even more confused, some
people present themselves with crossed arms as a sign that
they wish to receive on the tongue! Children who have not
yet made their first Communion may come up with their
parents who are receiving, but should not present
themselves individually for a blessing. Others, who cannot
receive, for whatever reason, should remain seated. The
proper time for the blessing follows the prayer after
Communion, which blessing all receive together.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the
Lord; an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to
recollect our mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them
on God and more specifically our Eucharistic Lord.
The Church and the world have a great need of
Eucharistic worship. Jesus waits for us in this
sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in
going to meet Him in adoration and in contemplation that
is full of faith, and ready to make reparation for the great
faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never
cease.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of
the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the
9:00 a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and
ends with reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55
a.m. on Saturday.
Call Diane Cieslak at 703-678-3919 to volunteer.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the
Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of
Arlington will have confessions available every
Wednesday evening from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm. If
you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament,
have been away for some time or just found it difficult
to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a
wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His
Church. Learn more at www.the-light-is-on.org.

Mission Statement
Siena Academy is the parish school at St. Catherine of
Siena. Its mission is to give glory to God and to assist
parents in the role as primary educators of their children
by offering specially prepared environments founded
upon the principles and discoveries made by Dr. Maria
Montessori with regard to the unique spiritual and
developmental needs of the child from birth to adulthood.

A Letter from the Head of School
Dear Parishioners,
As we continue to move throughout this
Lenten Season, please trust that the students are
keeping you in their prayers. It was such a grace to
have the students serving and reading at the noon
Ash Wednesday Mass. I hope you were as proud of
them as I was! We look forward to future
opportunities to share in the Liturgy with you as a
parish community. Following the Ash Wednesday
Mass, for lunch, the children shared bread and soup
which they had prepared. Each week in April the
elementary students will be preparing bag lunches to
take to the homeless shelter. I am confident that
there will be more Lenten opportunities to teach and
help the children to experience and live the three
"gifts" of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
On Thursday March 24
th
, the Elementary students
who will be participating in the Montessori United
Nations Program will host a Talent Show in Bishop
Justs Hall to raise funds for their trip. Hot dogs,
veggies, chips and juice will be served from 5:00 to
5:45 with the Talent Show beginning at 6:00 until
about 7:00. All parishioners are welcome. The
evening donation is $5.00 per person or $20.00 per
family. We hope you will join us. If you have talent to
share, please call the school. Miss Danielle, our
secretary, would be happy to add you to our program!
It sounds like the sale of car raffle tickets after the
Sunday Masses was successful. I sincerely
appreciate the parents who gave their time to sell
tickets and to the parishioners who are supporting our
fund raiser -- thank you! We have more tickets if you
need them! I am grateful to Father Drummond for his
support in allowing us to sell the tickets after each of
the Masses.
We trust in your prayerful support.
God Bless You All!
Sincerely,
Sister Janet Siepker, FSE
